Better Medicine – One App at a Time
My friend Dr. Natalie Hodge has a really cool project that I wanted to tell you about. She is launching an app that helps people manage their health. Below I’ve embedded a video so you can see what the project is all about. The video explains what they are trying to accomplish, what was the inspiration for the project and how you could help if you think this is something you’d like to support. Before you watch the video, I wanted to share why I support this project and why I chose to share it with you all. Natalie is a trailblazer. She has never been okay with our healthcare system. But instead of complaining,...

#23 Step by Step Guide To Setting Prices For Your Medical Practice [Pediatric Practice Management AwesomeCast]
At the end of last year, Chip and I talked about New Years resolutions. I shared a few things I had on my list of things I wanted to accomplish in 2014 and Chip provided several suggestions we could do as a practice. One of Chip’s resolutions for practices, was to adjust our pricing. I wrote his suggestion down. The truth is, I haven’t looked at our pricing in a couple of years. So I knew it was time. The thing is, I wasn’t sure if I was setting our practice’s pricing correctly, so I asked Chip to give me some direction. After talking about it a little we came to the conclusion that this would be a ...

The Reason Your Collection Letters Are Not Effective
Most patient collection letters I’ve seen come off very threatening and standoffish. They are written to intimidate. For example, they’ll say, “Final Notice” or “…your account will be sent to collections if you don’t respond...” The notion one is trying to convey is, you better pay now or else. At our practice, we sent out letters with these aggressive words. And most of them got ignored. So what did we do? We sent another letter but this time, with stronger words like  2nd Notice or Final Notice… you know, to get them to shake in their boots. Again, most of them were ignored. My guess is that a...

What Disney Can Teach Medical Practices About Keeping Employees Motivated
While touring Magic Kingdom as part of the Disney Institute customer service program, I learned that Disney doesn’t pay better salaries than other companies. I also learned that promotions are hard to come by. With 60,000 employees working at the parks alone, it is difficult to be chosen for a promotion when thousands of people are also applying for the job. Disney Park employees work long hours, mostly standing, in 100% humidity for a good portion of the year, work weekends and holidays, all while maintaining exceptional, customer centric, above and beyond, unsurpassed customer service, always. As it turns out, our ped...

A Birthday Celebration
Wanted to take this time and wish everybody a Merry Christmas. I’m a believer. So for me and my family, this day is a special “birthday” celebration. For those that don’t share a similar faith, I think it is still worthwhile to embrace the Christmas spirit of love, peace, joy, family, community, friends, sharing and gift giving. All good things on their own. Until next year.Filed under: Practice Management Tagged: Birthday, Christian, Christmas, Gift, Holiday, Jesus, Merry Christmas (Source: Pediatric Inc)

Earn 2 Free Passes to Attend a Pediatric Practice Management Seminar
During last AwesomeCast, Chip and I talked a little about different New Years resolutions that practices could adopt. I shared a few that have been on my plate which focused more on building culture. Chip had some really good ones. In fact, I wrote down a couple so I would remember to add them to my list. But one  I thought was especially good that Chip offered was to send staff members to a seminar.  To learn why this is a good idea, you’ll have to listen to the AwesomeCast. But to participate in our contest, keep on reading. As it turns out, our buddy Paul Vanchiere from Pediatric Management Institute is putting ...

What Every Pediatric Practice Manager Needs to Know About Vaccine Inventory
This is a guest post by Paul Vanchiere. He is the co-founder of Pediatric Practice Institute, a pediatric centric service company that helps practices and healthcare networks leverage their success and maximize their potential.  I recently took a trip to The Home Depot to round up some supplies for a project. While there, I noticed an army of people with laptops attached to rolling carts counting the inventory. It got me thinking about pediatric practices and the need to ensure tight inventory controls. While Home Depot does this for a variety of tax reasons, it is also part of its program to ensure that its inventory le...

Four Easy Steps To Successfully Create Bad Goals
If you have kids, you know that for whatever reason, they like to do the exact opposite of what we tell them. If you ask your child not to climb the furniture, you can almost be guaranteed that when you walk back into the room, your 6-year old will be on top of the furniture. Any sentence that begins with don’t, stop, sit down, calm down, get up, come here, is in essence an invitation to do the opposite. More than once, I’ve encouraged bad behavior in an effort to get them to do the right thing. “Put your tongue on that sizzling skillet and let me know if it is hot? Go ahead. Do it!. C’mon, I really...

The Secret That Is Helping Practice Managers Hire The Best Candidates
Foto Credit: Blolg.eskill.com When you are ready to hire your next doctor, what process do you follow? What steps does your practice take to ensure you are hiring the best candidate? For many of us, the process begins with shifting through CVs looking for candidates that look good on paper. And once we find one that does, we invite them for an interview. During the interview, we ask the candidate a series of questions with the intent to learn more about them professionally and personally. Some people come up with clever questions to see how the candidate responds. Others merely focus on the clinical knowledge. Some practi...

Thoughts On The AAP NCE 2013 – Orlando
If you follow me on social media, you probably know I was in Orlando at the AAP NCE this past week. Every year right before the date of the convention, I start to dread going. Leaving town is always hard when you have a million things to do. And since we still have little ones, and I don’t travel often for business, I feel a hint of guilt leaving my wife behind fending for herself. But once I arrive, the anticipation, excitement, and nervousness starts to settle in. I like the feeling. The Disney Institute The highlight of my trip was attending a class lead by the Disney Institute. That class was probably one of the ...
