Opening remarks at the Ebola vaccines for Guinea and the world event
4 May 2017 – At an event held in Conakry, Guinea, Dr Margaret Chan thanked the presidents of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone for supporting the development of a new Ebola vaccine which provides substantial protection against this highly lethal disease. The close collaboration of Guinea’s national authori ties was a catalysing factors in successful implementation of the WHO vaccine trial. 23 January 2017 – In her report to the Executive Board, Dr Margaret Chan reviewed recent achievements that show how WHO is shaping the global health landscape. She also issued an alert to the exceptionally wide outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in birds, and called on all countries to detect and repo rt related human cases immediately. China ’s growing contribution to health at home and on the global stage, lecture at the Chinese Academy of Governance

In her address to an extraordinary session of the financing dialogue, Dr Chan warned that, without further financial contributions, the current programme budget cannot be fully financed and implemented. The health emergencies programme is the most important underfunded programme. . For financing the HIV programme during the biennium, funds are expected to be reduced from $35 million to $11.5 million. This is around only 15% of funding for HIV available in the previous biennium. Obesity and diabetes: the slow-motion disaster Keynote address at the 47th meeting of the National Academy of Medicine
In her keynote address, Dr Chan reviewed the alarming dual global epidemics of obesity and diabetes, citing statistics from around the world that reveal the severity of this “slow motion disaster”. As a contributing factor, she cites historical changes, beginning in the 1960s, that industrialized food production and divorced the international food system from its primary purpose of sustaining human life in good health.
