Obesity and diabetes: the slow-motion disaster Keynote address at the 47th meeting of the National Academy of Medicine

In her keynote address, Dr Chan reviewed the alarming dual global epidemics of obesity and diabetes, citing statistics from around the world that reveal the severity of this “slow motion disaster”. As a contributing factor, she cites historical changes, beginning in the 1960s, that industrialized food production and divorced the international food system from its primary purpose of sustaining human life in good health.
