FDA: Facilities Must Ensure that Mammography Physics Surveys Performed
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reminds certified mammography facilities that it is their responsibility to utilize the services of a qualified medical physicist to survey their equipment, to oversee the equipment-related quality control (QC) program and to perform mammography equipment evaluations (MEE) on X-ray units and image processors, whenever such evaluations are necessary. 40,000 Pledges to Image Wisely
On Jan. 12, the Image Wisely® campaign received its 40,000th pledge. The majority of those pledges were made by individuals involved with medical imaging; however, associations/educational programs and imaging facilities are also included in the tally. Beginning in 2016, pledges to Image Wisely must be renewed annually; they will expire on Dec. 31 every year. New CMS XR-29 "Smart Dose" Rules Now in Effect; See Updated FAQs
Federal law requiring that health care providers comply with the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) XR-29 Standard Attributes on CT Equipment Related to Dose Optimization and Management, or face payment cuts for using non-compliant CT equipment is now in effect. As of January 1, 2016, the technical component for certain imaging procedures performed on CT equipment not in compliance with all four attributes of the XR-29 Standard are subject to a 5 percent per scan payment reduction. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) is transitioning from incentives for participating to penalties for noncompliance.
