Stigma Scale for Receiving Psychological Help (SSRPH): An Examination Among Adolescent Girls
This article reports the reliability and validity of the SSRPH in adolescent girls (N = 156, age = 13-17). Discriminant validity was supported, but concurrent validity was not. The confirmatory factor analysis revealed excellent model fit and serves as beginning evidence for construct validity. Cronbach’s alpha for the SSRPH was .65. The SSRPH was stable over 8 weeks. Findings suggest that the SSRPH can serve as a foundation for further instrument development. Future studies may explore enhancing the reliability and validity of the SSRPH and use advanced analytic techniques to examine the overall global construct of ...

Revision of the Osteoporosis Knowledge Test: Reliability and Validity
The purpose of this study was to revise the Osteoporosis Knowledge Test (OKT) and evaluate its reliability and validity. The original OKT, developed in the early 1990s, needed updating based on current research. A convenience sample of 105 adults completed the draft revised OKT. A subsample (n = 27) completed the questionnaire 2 weeks later to determine stability. The sample was recruited from diverse sites in western and northern Michigan over a year. The 32-item Revised OKT (2012) demonstrated internal consistency (total scale Kuder–Richardson-20 = .85, Nutrition subscale = .83, and Exercise subscale = .81). Test&n...

Predictors of Maternal Parental Self-Efficacy Among Primiparas in the Early Postnatal Period
Maternal parental self-efficacy is a crucial factor for facilitating the smooth transition into motherhood, particularly for primiparas. The aims of this study were to examine the predictors of maternal parental self-efficacy and its relationship with social support, postnatal depression (PND), and socio-demographic variables of primiparas during the early postnatal period. A descriptive correlational study design was adopted. The instruments, Perceived Maternal Parental Self-Efficacy, Perinatal Infant Care Social Support, and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, were used to collect data from a purposive sample of 122 pr...

Correlates of Physical Activity in Middle-Aged Women With and Without Diabetes
This comparative and correlational study examined personal and social-cognitive factors related to physical activity in middle-aged women with (n = 37) and without (n = 67) type 2 diabetes (T2D). Compared with those without the condition, women with T2D attained less accelerometer-measured moderate, t = –3.35(89.40), p = .001, and vigorous physical activity, t = –2.76(59.30), p = .008, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), t = –3.50(91.19), p = .001, and had lower physical activity self-efficacy, t = –2.6(101), p = .01, and perceived benefits of physical activity, t = –2.4(51.0), ...

Preferred Thinking Style, Symptom Recognition, and Response by Nursing Students During Simulation
A better understanding of the relationships between symptom recognition, nursing response, and preferred thinking style is needed to improve nursing education practices. Final semester nursing students (N = 29) completed a high fidelity patient simulation (HFPS) scenario; recognized symptoms (i.e., dyspnea) and responses (i.e., apply oxygen) were recorded, and compared with students’ preferred thinking style using the Rational-Experiential Inventory–40. Relationships between concepts were explored. Significant relationships were noted between preference for Rational thinking styles and symptom recognition (p &l...

The Impact of Caregiving on Caregivers' Medication Adherence and Appointment Keeping
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between care demands and caregivers’ medication adherence and health appointment keeping. A cross-sectional correlational design was used to survey a convenience sample of 45 informal caregivers of persons with dementia. Pearson product–moment correlations and hierarchical multiple regressions were used to examine the relationships among study variables. Nearly one third of caregivers reported frequently or occasionally missing medication doses and nearly a half reported not being able to fully keep appointments with health care providers. Female gender...

Sociocultural Influences on Weight-Related Behaviors in African American Adolescents
The purpose of this study was to examine the sociocultural factors related to weight behaviors in African American adolescents utilizing a social ecological approach. A descriptive correlational design included a sample of 145 African American adolescents. Perceived familial socialization, ethnic identity, physical activity, and eating behavior patterns were measured. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson product–moment correlations, and multiple regression equations. Perceived maternal socialization was significantly related to adolescent eating behaviors and physical activity whereas perceived pa...

Acupoint Stimulation on Weight Reduction for Obesity: A Randomized Sham-Controlled Study
This study aimed to investigate the effect of a 10-week intervention of auricular electrical stimulation combined with auricular acupressure on weight reduction in obese outpatients. In this single-blind randomized sham-controlled study, 134 participants were randomly assigned to an experimental group receiving stimulation at true acupoints, or a sham group receiving stimulation delivered in the same manner but at sham acupoints. Each participant received nutrition counseling by a nutritionist weekly. The results showed significant differences in body mass index, blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and leptin ...

Feasibility of Utilizing Ethnic Beauty Salons for Cervical Cancer Screening Education
The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of using ethnic beauty salons to reach out to Vietnamese and Korean American women for cervical cancer screening education. Participants (N = 62) were conveniently recruited from ethnic beauty salons located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Two feasibility questionnaires were separately administered to cosmetologists and their customers. Findings support the view that ethnic beauty salons can be used as a gateway to reach out to these populations, and cosmetologists have the potential to operate as community lay health workers to deliver cervical cancer screening education...

Hispanic Inpatient Pain Intensity
Hispanic adults experience significant pain, but little is known about their pain during hospitalization. The purpose of this research was to describe Hispanic inpatients’ pain intensity and compare their pain intensity with that of non-Hispanic patients. A post hoc descriptive design was used to examine 1,466 Hispanic inpatients’ medical records (63.2% English speakers) and 12,977 non-Hispanic inpatients’ medical records from one hospital for 2012. Mean documented pain intensity was mild for both Hispanic and non-Hispanic inpatients. Pain intensity was greater for English-speaking Hispanic patients than ...

Handoffs and Patient Safety: Grasping the Story and Painting a Full Picture
Effective handoff communication is critical for patient safety. Research is needed to understand how information processes occurring intra-shift impact handoff effectiveness. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine medical-surgical nurses’ (n = 21) perspectives about processes that promote and hinder patient safety intra-shift and during handoff. Results indicated that offgoing nurses’ ability to grasp the story intra-shift was essential to convey the full picture during handoff. When oncoming nurses understood the picture being conveyed at the handoff, nurses jointly painted a full picture. Arrivi...

Exploration of Social, Environmental, and Familial Influences on the Sexual Health Practices of Urban African American Adolescents
Despite efforts to examine social influences and provide interventions that lead to safer sexual practices for African American (AA) adolescent girls, statistics have demonstrated this population continues to have the highest rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV when compared with adolescent girls of other races. Guided by the principles of Black Feminist Thought and Photovoice and focus group methodology, this descriptive study aimed to discover the social realities influencing a group of eight AA adolescent girls aged 15 to 19 years. Data from individual interviews and a focus ...
