Symptom Representation and Treatment-Seeking Prior to Diagnosis of Atrial Fibrillation
Early treatment-seeking for symptoms of atrial fibrillation (AF) is critical to avert AF-related stroke and heart failure, but early treatment is hindered if symptoms are not accurately interpreted. The purpose of this research was to describe symptom representation and treatment-seeking responses prior to diagnosis of AF. For this descriptive study, 150 participants were surveyed to describe the type and temporality of symptoms, perceptions regarding the cause, seriousness, controllability of symptoms, and responses to symptoms prior to diagnosis. Participants’ mean age was 66.5 years, and 51% were female. Participa...

Evaluation of Elements of the Nursing Worklife Model Using Unit-Level Data
The practice environment is important to nurse satisfaction and patient outcomes. Laschinger and Leiter posited causal relationships by development and testing of the Nursing Worklife Model (NWLM). Using a secondary analysis of unit-level data (N = 3,203; medical, surgical, medical–surgical, critical-care, and step-down units) from the 2011 National Database for Nursing Quality Indicators®, hypothesized pathways of the NWLM were tested using structural equation modeling. Practice Environment subscales developed by Lake were used to operationalize model variables with job enjoyment being the outcome variable. Posi...

Effectiveness of a Releasing Exercise Program on Anxiety and Self-Efficacy Among Nurses
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a releasing exercise program (REP) on anxiety and exercise self-efficacy among nurses. The REP consisted of warm-up and tension-releasing exercises and mood adjustment. Ninety-nine nurses (age = 33.38 ± 7.38 years) experiencing anxiety (average Visual Analog Scale for Anxiety [VASA] score of 5.63 ± 1.44 at baseline) were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 50) that received 50-min REP sessions 3 times a week or a control group (n = 49) that did not attend REP sessions. The outcome measures were VASA, the Chinese Version of the Beck Anx...

Effects of Progressive Muscle Relaxation Intervention in Extremity Fracture Surgery Patients
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of progressive muscle relaxation on state anxiety and self-efficacy in hospitalized patients admitted for an extremity fracture receiving elective surgery. Eighty four patients met the inclusion criteria and all were randomly assigned to either the progressive muscle relaxation group or the control group. The control group received standard orthopedic nursing care, and the experimental group received standard care along with daily progressive muscle relaxation throughout their hospitalization. The State Anxiety Inventory and Self-Efficacy Scales were administered before ...

Reliability and Validity of the NDNQI(R) Injury Falls Measure
This study used an overall intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) estimate and factor analysis to assess the reliability and validity of the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators® (NDNQI®) falls with injury measure. Data were collected from an online Fall Injury Level Survey that was administered to 1,159 NDNQI site coordinators (39.7% response rate; 91% registered nurses [RNs]). Estimated overall ICC was .85. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with a Promax rotation (root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] = 0.053) identified three latent factors: No Injury, Minor Injury, and Moderate/Major Inj...

Q-Sample Construction: A Critical Step for a Q-Methodological Study
Q-sample construction is a critical step in Q-methodological studies. Prior to conducting Q-studies, researchers start with a population of opinion statements (concourse) on a particular topic of interest from which a sample is drawn. These sampled statements are known as the Q-sample. Although literature exists on methodological processes to conduct Q-methodological studies, limited guidance exists on the practical steps to reduce the population of statements to a Q-sample. A case exemplar illustrates the steps to construct a Q-sample in preparation for a study that explored perspectives nurse educators and nursing studen...

Factors Associated With Hospitalizations Among HIV-Infected Adults in the United States: Review of the Literature
Although improving health outcomes in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected persons has been identified as a national priority, little is known about the factors associated with hospitalizations of HIV-infected persons in the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) era. Since the introduction of HAART in 1996, there has been a dramatic increase in the life expectancy of HIV-infected persons. However, aging and the long term use of HIV medications have led to an increased incidence of chronic, non-HIV-related illnesses. To improve patient outcomes, the factors that contribute to co-morbidities in HIV-infected per...

Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms in Post-ICU Family Members: Review and Methodological Challenges
Family members of intensive care unit (ICU) patients are at risk for symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following ICU discharge. The aim of this systematic review is to examine the current literature regarding post-ICU family PTSD symptoms with an emphasis on methodological issues in conducting research on this challenging phenomenon. An extensive review of the literature was performed confining the search to English language studies reporting PTSD symptoms in adult family members of adult ICU patients. Ten studies were identified for review published from 2004 to 2012. Findings demonstrate a significant pre...

Predictors of Health-Related Quality of Life Among Patients With Myocardial Infarction
This cross-sectional correlational study aimed to examine health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and its predictors among patients with myocardial infarction (MI). One hundred and twenty-eight outpatients with MI were recruited from a university hospital. The 12-item Short-Form Health Survey version 2, Myocardial Infarction Dimensional Assessment Scale (MIDAS), and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were used to measure the study variables. Compared with the findings of similar studies of patients with MI, this sample, despite having significant coronary risk factors, reported generally better HRQoL. Predictors o...

Smoking, Physical Activity, and Eating Habits Among Adolescents
The purpose of this study was to compare physical activity and eating habits of adolescent smokers with those of adolescent non-smokers in South Korea. This was a secondary analysis of data collected from the 2012 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey. The sample included 72,229 adolescents aged 12 to 18. A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the association between smoking status and physical activity and between smoking status and eating habits, while controlling for other factors. Boys and girls were analyzed separately for all analyses. The proportion of self-reporting smokers was 11%. ...

Job and Professional Leaving Among Newly Licensed RNs: A Structural Equation Model
This study empirically tests a structural equation model of registered nurse (RN) intent to leave the job and profession using data from a survey of newly licensed RNs (NLRNs). Job demands, difficulties and control, intent to leave the job, and intent to leave the profession were latent variables. A number of direct, indirect, and mediating relationships were modeled. Measurement models for all latent variables and the structural model had good fit. The final model showed a path from job demands, difficulties, and control to job satisfaction to intent to leave the job to intent to leave the profession. The results suggest ...
