Community-Based Case Management, Hospital Utilization, and Patient-Focused Outcomes in Medicare Beneficiaries
There is limited research about the impact of community-based case management (CBCM) services and its outcomes with longitudinal analysis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a CBCM intervention on patient outcomes in Medicare beneficiaries with chronic illness in a CBCM service in the rural Midwest. A descriptive, repeated-measures design was used, and a secondary analysis of a data set containing longitudinal CBCM data, originally collected from 2002 to 2007, was conducted. Two years of case management (CM) interventions, three health-service utilization outcomes, and three patient-focused outc...

Caregiving Choice and Emotional Stress Among Cancer Caregivers
This study is a secondary analysis of cross-sectional telephone interviews of 1,247 family caregivers, which included 104 cancer caregivers. The findings indicated that a high majority of cancer caregivers expressed elevated emotional stress. Most caregivers perceived themselves to have had a choice in providing care; however, a perceived lack of choice in providing care was significantly associated with greater emotional stress. Assessing clinical and policy-related strategies for alleviating concerns related to choice may be of value in the cancer context. (Source: Western Journal of Nursing Research)

Nursing Staffing and Quality of Life in Western New York Nursing Homes
This study investigated the relationship between nurse staffing and quality of life (QOL) in Western New York State nursing homes. This was a cross-sectional, correlational study. The independent variables were hours per resident day (HPRD), skill mix, and turnover rate of nursing staff. The outcomes were measured using the self-reported QOL instrument. No coefficients were statistically significant with registered nurses’ (RNs) HPRD. Certified nursing assistant (CNA) HPRD had a statistically significant positive impact on the spiritual well-being domain. There was a statistically negative relationship between the am...

Association of Psychosocial Factors and Heart Rate Variability in Heart Failure Patients
The purpose of this study was to examine the association of psychosocial factors (depression, social support, and health-related quality of life) with heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with heart failure. The sample comprised 91 outpatients from a medical center. Data were collected using the Beck Depression Inventory–II, Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) Social Support Survey, and Minnesota Living With Heart Failure Questionnaire. HRV was measured in terms of time-domain parameters from a 24-hr ambulatory Holter electrocardiogram. After adjusting for demographic and clinical variables, quality of life and social s...

Factors Influencing RNs' Perceptions of Quality Geriatric Care in Rural Hospitals
This study explored how the work environment influences registered nurses’ (RNs’) perceived quality of geriatric care in rural hospitals. We used an exploratory mixed-methods research design emphasizing the qualitative data (in-depth, semi-structured interviews). Quantitative data (questionnaire) measuring the RN work environment were also collected to augment qualitative data. Four themes emerged: (a) collegial RN relationships, (b) poor staffing/utilization, (c) technology benefits/challenges, and (d) RN–physician interactions, which were identified as key factors influencing the quality of geriatric ca...

A Longitudinal Approach to Understanding the Relationship Between Symptom Status and QOL
This study demonstrates how a variant of growth curve modeling known as longitudinal parallel-process modeling can yield an understanding of the effect of symptoms on quality of life (QOL). A two-level hierarchical linear model with random intercepts and slopes was implemented within a structural equation modeling approach. The data (N = 367) comes from a large database of persons with HIV-associated illness. Twenty-three symptoms based on the Sign and Symptom Checklist for Persons with HIV disease and items measuring QOL from the general health status scales were used. Each respondent completed from 1 to 11 questionnaires...

A Motivational Physical Activity Intervention for Improving Mobility in Older Korean Americans
This study aims to examine the effects of a Motivational Physical Activity Intervention (MPAI) on social resource, behavioral change process, physical activity, and mobility variables in sedentary older Korean Americans. A quasi-experimental, repeated-measure, pre- and post-tests design was used. Sixty-four community-dwelling, sedentary older Korean Americans (n = 33 for MPAI group, n = 31 for Attention Control group) participated in the study. There were significant improvements in social resources, including social support from family and friends; behavioral change process variables, including self-efficacy; motivational...

Psychometric Properties of the Resourcefulness Scale Among Caregivers of Persons With Autism Spectrum Disorder
This study examined the psychometrics of the 28-item RS in a convenience sample of 204 ASD caregivers. A Cronbach’s alpha of .91 showed the internal consistency of the RS. Construct validity was supported by the emergence of two dimensions of resourcefulness (personal and social) in a confirmatory factor analysis and by substantial intercorrelations between the two subscales (r = .48, p < .001). Findings suggested the reliability and validity of RS among ASD caregivers, which is a necessary step toward implementing resourcefulness interventions to help ASD caregivers to deal with their stress and improve their qua...

Exploration of the Short-Term and Long-Term Effects of Parental Illness on Children's Educational and Behavioral Functioning Using a Large Taiwanese Sample
This study used data from Waves I and II of the Taiwan Educational Panel Survey (TEPS) to explore the potential short-term and long-term effects of parental illness and health condition on children’s behavioral and educational functioning. A sample of 11,018 junior high school students and their parents and teachers in Taiwan were included in this present study. The results supported previous work that parental illness may place children at slight risk for poor psychosocial adjustment and behavioral problems. Parental illness was associated with lower adaptive skills and more behavioral problems in children. Children...

Cultural Frames, Qualities of Life, and the Aging Self
We used the Self-Concept Enhancement Tactician (SCENT) model to explore whether older Norwegians and Canadians would tactically self-enhance on qualities considered significant within their cultures in their self-perceptions of aging. Qualities were measured using the WHOQOL-BREF and WHOQOL-OLD. Self-perceptions of aging were measured by the Attitudes to Aging Questionnaire. The study is a secondary analysis of data collected in a larger study; 393 older Norwegians and 202 older Canadians were included. The Norwegian and Canadian group self-enhanced their perceptions of psychosocial loss based on harmonious social relation...
