Budget Impact of Cryoablation Versus Radiofrequency Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation in the Brazilian Public Healthcare System
ConclusionsCryoablation of AF resulted in cost savings compared with the current scenario (RF ablation guided by electroanatomic mapping). When alternative technologies were considered, cryoablation was more expensive than RF ablation with a nonirrigated catheter, but it also resulted in savings compared with RF ablation guided by intracardiac echocardiography. Overall, cryoablation of AF may reduce expenditures in the Brazilian public health system. (Source: Value in Health Regional Issues)

Resource Utilization and Costs Associated With Percutaneous Coronary Intervention When Treating Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome in the Mexican National Institute of Cardiology “Ignacio Chávez”
ConclusionThe mean cost per patient shows that PCI is an expensive procedure in Mexico. A lack of subsidies for surgical equipment places a high economic burden on the patient and represents a barrier of access for a vulnerable population that likely increases mortality and morbidity rates in those patients unable to pay for treatment and a potential high burden of debt for those who do pay. External Reference Pricing for Pharmaceuticals—A Survey and Literature Review to Describe Best Practices for Countries With Expanding Healthcare Coverage
ConclusionPolicymakers should consider a set of requirements when introducing ERP, including clear definitions and decision criteria in full transparency. External reference pricing should inform and serve as a benchmark for pricing decisions, rather than being used as the sole pricing mechanism. External reference pricing is primarily a tool to support decisions regarding on-patent pharmaceuticals, and for off-patent products, competition may prove more effective in reducing prices than ERP.
