Hallucinations in borderline personality disorder and common mental disorders [SHORT REPORTS]
Hallucinations are classically associated with psychotic disorders. Recent research, however, has highlighted that hallucinations frequently occur outside of the context of psychosis. Despite this, to our knowledge, there has been no epidemiological research to compare the prevalence of hallucinations across common mental disorders with the prevalence in borderline personality disorder (BPD). Using data from the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (n = 7403), we investigated the prevalence of hallucinations in individuals with a range of mental disorders and BPD. Hallucinations were prevalent in all disorders (range 11&ndas...

Neuroplastic changes in patients with schizophrenia undergoing cognitive remediation: triple-blind trial [PAPERS]
Conclusions We replicated the finding that cognitive remediation increases left lateral prefrontal activation during a working memory task in patients with schizophrenia, suggesting this may be an important neural target for these types of interventions. (Source: The British Journal of Psychiatry)

Cerebral blood flow alterations specific to auditory verbal hallucinations in schizophrenia [PAPERS]
Conclusions The AVH-specific CBF increases in the auditory and striatal areas and CBF reductions in the visual and parietal areas suggest that there exists a CBF redistribution associated with AVHs. (Source: The British Journal of Psychiatry)

Relationship between prescribed psychotropic medications and co-ingested alcohol in intentional self-poisonings [PAPERS]
Conclusions Findings indicate that being medicated for a psychiatric illness may reduce the likelihood of alcohol consumption during times of acute distress, hence perhaps may reduce the risk of intentional self-poisoning. (Source: The British Journal of Psychiatry)

Pharmacological treatment and risk of psychiatric hospital admission in bipolar disorder [PAPERS]
Conclusions Our findings complement results from randomised controlled trails, but suggest that lithium is more effective than both quetiapine and olanzapine in routine clinical practice. (Source: The British Journal of Psychiatry)

Initial severity of depression and efficacy of cognitive-behavioural therapy: individual-participant data meta-analysis of pill-placebo-controlled trials [Review articles]
Conclusions Patients suffering from major depression can expect as much benefit from CBT across the wide range of baseline severity. This finding can help inform individualised treatment decisions by patients and their clinicians. (Source: The British Journal of Psychiatry)

Mood disorders in first- and second-generation immigrants: systematic review and meta-analysis [Review articles]
Conclusions Clinicians should view FGIs as a group at risk of mood disorders, especially men. Further research is needed to understand immigrants' risk, especially in SGI. (Source: The British Journal of Psychiatry)

Are some of the stigmas of addictions culturally sanctioned? [EDITORIALS]
We provide three examples of how addiction stigma is sanctioned: (a) discrimination against people with addictions is often legal; (b) public health communications frequently use stigma to promote prevention; (c) some programmes, such as ‘12 steps’ promote self-stigma. The implications of sanctioned stigma for stigma-change programmes are then discussed. (Source: The British Journal of Psychiatry)

Psychedelics and the science of self-experience [EDITORIALS]
Altered self-experiences arise in certain psychiatric conditions, and may be induced by psychoactive drugs and spiritual/religious practices. Recently, a neuroscience of self-experience has begun to crystallise, drawing upon findings from functional neuroimaging and altered states of consciousness occasioned by psychedelic drugs. This advance may be of great importance for psychiatry. (Source: The British Journal of Psychiatry)
