An expert system for the diagnosis and management of oral ulcers
Publication date: April 2014 Source:Tanta Dental Journal, Volume 11, Issue 1 Author(s): Sh.A. Ali , H.I. Saudi The present research was conducted to introduce a Visual Basic expert system to help the postgraduate students in the diagnosis and treatment of the most common and rare oral ulcers. A total of sixty postgraduate students shared in the study. They received the system on a CD-ROM and asked to evaluate it using a printed questionnaire. The oral ulcerative conditions merged in the database included, aphthous ulcers, chancre, traumatic ulcers, histoplasmosis ulcers, acute herpetic ulcers, burns, herpangina, tube...

Cleaning efficacy of different root canal preparation systems and irrigation regimens
Publication date: April 2014 Source:Tanta Dental Journal, Volume 11, Issue 1 Author(s): W.M. Ghoneim , A.M. Farag , A.H. Labib , A.M. Darrag Purpose To compare the cleaning efficacy of root canal walls after using two Nickel–Titanium (Ni–Ti) rotary files (Flexmaster and Mtwo) and one hand Ni–Ti file (Ni–Ti flex-K) when associated with different final irrigation regimens (SmearClear, 17% ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) and sodium hypochlorite). Materials and methods Ninety extracted human premolars with similar range of canal curvature (21–39°) were selected. After crown removal and working le...

One year clinical follow up of nano filled glass ionomer and composite resin restorations
Conclusion Most of the restorations maintained good quality during the observation period, which was considered a short evaluation time. Clinical implications Grandio SO and Ketac N100 achieved clinically acceptable results after one year of service. So both materials may be used with confidence in Class V carious lesions. A longer evaluation period may be recommended to decide the use of restorative material safely in Class V cavities. (Source: Tanta Dental Journal)

One year clinical follow up of a silorane-based versus a methacrylate-based composite resin
Conclusion 1-The clinical performance of silorane based composite (Filtek P90) was deemed acceptable after one year; with no obvious advantage compared to methacrylate based composite. 2-The low shrinkage associated with (Filtek P90) may not be a determinant factor for its high clinical performance. Biocompatibility of dental alloys used in dental fixed prosthodontics
This article presents a literature review on the biocompatibility of dental alloys. A PubMed database search was conducted for studies pertaining to the biocompatibility of dental alloys. The search was limited to peer-reviewed articles published in English between 1985 and 2013. Available data revealed that substances are released from alloys into the surrounding tissues; mainly nickel, zinc, and copper. Some alloys such as nickel–chromium alloy have shown to be cytotoxic in vitro. Also, elements released from gold alloy showed in vitro cytotoxic effect. Therefore, clinicians should give up assuming that gold alloy is...

Effect of implant assisted partial overdenture with neutral zone concept in partially resected mandible restoration on facial contour and bone density
This study was performed to evaluate the effect of implant assisted partial overdenture located in neutral zone for restoring partially resected mandible on facial contour and bone density. Material and methods 10 patients their age range from 18 to 45 years were selected. Each patient had partially resected mandible with osseous bone graft. Patients received removable partial overdenture assisted by two implants with suitable length and diameter guided by CBCT scan using early loading protocol two months after implant insertion. That partial overdenture respected neutral zone registration. Patients were recalled after t...

Effect of repeated bleaching by low hydrogen peroxide regimens – with and without MI Paste Plus – on enamel hardness and composition
Publication date: August 2014 Source:Tanta Dental Journal, Volume 11, Issue 2 Author(s): S.E. Abo-Hamar , W.M. Etman Objectives The aim of the present study was to test the following hypotheses: 1. In-vitro repeated bleaching by low hydrogen peroxide (HP) regimens –at 2-month interval- will affect enamel hardness and composition. 2. The use of MI Paste Plus, GC Co. (MIPP) during bleaching treatments will reduce these possible enamel changes. Methods Two 14-day bleaching regimens; 1 h/day of 10% carbamide peroxide (CP) gel; Opalescence PF (OpPF) and 30 min/day of 9.5% HP strips; Crest Whitestrips Advanced Seal (...

Heamangioma in parotid gland encroaching on the temporomandibular joint: A case report
Publication date: August 2014 Source:Tanta Dental Journal, Volume 11, Issue 2 Author(s): S.A. Elsayed , H.H. Alahmady The majority of swellings in the parotid region are sialadenitis, neoplastic lesion or lymph node. Vascular malformation is a rare cause of swelling of the parotid gland. Parotid heamangioma usually presents as a cystic swelling in the preauricular area but may mimic sialadenitis making the diagnosis difficult. We are reporting, to our knowledge, the first case of parotid gland heamangioma with its clinical presentation, radiological and surgical features which extended medially to the temporomandibul...

Effectiveness of different final irrigation solutions on smear layer removal in intraradicular dentin
Conclusion Final irrigation with 0.2% chitosan solution was more efficient in smear layer removal. 17% EDTA, 10% CA, MTAD and 0.2% chitosan effectively but not completely remove the smear layer especially at the apical root levels. (Source: Tanta Dental Journal)

Platelet rich fibrin versus Hemcon dental dressing following dental extraction in patients under anticoagulant therapy
Conclusions PRF has good antihemorrhagic properties and increases tissue healing and wound closure, thus allowing for a quick recovery without significant painful events. HDD has excellent hemostatic properties and can be used safely in such patients but with small amounts. (Source: Tanta Dental Journal)
