Surgery-related complications of ventral hernia reported to the Finnish Patient Insurance Centre
Conclusions: The claims for financial compensation for injuries related to primary and incisional hernioplasties are quite uncommon. Major complications, though comparatively rare, are significantly more common after laparoscopic operations. (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Surgery)

The initial experience of introducing the Onstep technique for inguinal hernia repair in a general surgical department
Conclusions: It seems from this study that the Onstep technique is a safe method for inguinal hernia repair regarding perioperative and postoperative complications. The postoperative pain seems to be equal to or lower than after the Lichtenstein technique. (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Surgery)

Single-anastomosis gastric bypass: Better, faster, and safer?
Conclusion: The single-anastomosis gastric bypass may be an attractive alternative metabolic operation. However, further studies with robust, long-term follow-up are needed. (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Surgery)

Surgery in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus
Conclusion: Surgery is an effective treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in obese patients. The most optimal surgical procedure for the treatment of obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus is still to be established. More research is needed to explore the mechanisms of glycemic control after bariatric surgery. (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Surgery)

Weight loss prior to bariatric surgery: An updated review of the literature
Conclusion: Although a large amount of data in the current literature on the effects of weight loss prior to bariatric surgery are inconsistent for many outcome parameters, recently published results regarding effects on postoperative complications and weight development over time strongly suggest that such a regimen should be recommended. Whether a certain degree of weight loss should be mandatory before being accepted for bariatric surgery is, however, still controversial. (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Surgery)

Bariatric surgery in adolescents: what do we know so far?
Conclusion: Accumulating evidence suggests that the benefits seen in adult bariatric surgery can be reproduced in adolescents. Thus, adolescent bariatric surgery appears to be safe and effective in achieving benefits desired in terms of weight control and improvements in metabolic health and quality of life. However, particular care must be taken when treating a young population, and long-term outcomes are awaited to properly define indications and limitations. (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Surgery)

Changing Trends in Bariatric Surgery
Conclusions: Bariatric surgery has changed significantly over the years. The safety of the laparoscopic approach, along with the better understanding of the metabolic changes obtained postoperatively, has led to a more individualized approach and also an attempt to expand the indications for these procedures. Psychological characteristics, eating behavior, and quality of life assessment of obese patients undergoing weight loss interventions
Conclusions: Surgical patients were younger, had a higher body mass index, and obesity had a higher impact on their quality of life than on non-surgical patients, but they did not differ in the majority of eating behavior and psychological parameters studied. Patients opting for adjustable gastric banding surgery were more anxious, depressed, and had more problems with energy levels than those choosing vertical sleeve gastrectomy, and more work problems compared to those undergoing gastric bypass. Weight loss after bariatric surgery was predicted by pre-operative scores of dietary restraint, disinhibition, and pre-surgery ...

Laparoscopic Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Versus Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding in the Super-Obese: Peri-Operative and Early Outcomes
Conclusion: There seems to be no significant differences in early complications between laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding operations in the short term. Weight loss and excess weight loss percent at 6 and 12 months are significantly better after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Surgery)

Factors predicting the development of early osteoarthritis following lateral tibial plateau fractures: mid-term clinical and radiographic outcomes of 73 operatively treated patients
Conclusions: The postoperative articular congruity and normal mechanical axis of the lower leg after plate fixation in lateral tibial plateau fractures seem to have a role in prevention of posttraumatic osteoarthritis but does not appear to predict clinical outcome at medium-term follow-up. The role of initial dislocation and associated cartilage damage in the development of osteoarthritis following these fractures is still unknown. (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Surgery)

Analysis of patient satisfaction and donor-site morbidity after different types of breast reconstruction
Conclusions: Our results indicate that operation type, complication rate, and revision rate did not independently correlate with patient satisfaction. Therefore, to further improve patient satisfaction, future research should be focused on other pro-operative factors, for example, patient education, expectations, and personality characteristics.
