Restorative Proctocolectomy for Ulcerative Colitis in 1985-2009
Conclusion: The ileal pouch-anal anastomosis technique used in restorative proctocolectomy had changed over the past years from hand-sewn to stapled anastomosis. Covering ileostomy seemed to protect against major complications. Pouchitis was the most common late complication. (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Surgery)

Etiology, Diagnosis and Treatment of Tendinous Knee Extensor Mechanism Injuries
Conclusion: Risk factors for patella and quadriceps tendon rupture include increasing age, repetitive micro-trauma, genetic predisposition, and systemic diseases, as well as certain medications. Diagnosis is based on history and clinical findings, but can be complemented by ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging. Accurate diagnosis at an early stage is of utmost importance since delay in surgical repair of over 3 weeks results in significantly poorer outcomes. Operative treatment of acute ruptures yields good clinical results with low complication rates. Use of longitudinal transpatellar drill holes is the operative meth...

Mid-term Results of Oxford Phase 3 Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasties at a Small-Volume Center
Conclusions: The mean follow-up time was 6.5 years, and the Kaplan–Meier estimated 9-year implant survival rate was 88.9% (95% confidence interval = 78.7%–99.1%). The median Knee Society score of 77 (range: 18–93) at follow-up was considered good (range: 70–79). In this study, we found out that medial knee pain remains in 10% of unicompartmental knee arthroplasties several years after surgery, although the reason for the pain remained unclear. These mid-term results are promising, and good results can be achieved also at a small-volume center when strict patient selection is followed. (Source: Scand...

Comparison of Injury Severity Between Moped and Motorcycle Crashes: A Finnish Two-Year Prospective Hospital-Based Study
Conclusions: According to the maximum Abbreviated Injury Scale and New Injury Severity Scores, the injury severity was equal for motorcycle and moped crashes. The degree of agreement between the hospital dataset and the official statistics was 32%. (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Surgery)

Amputation-Free Survival after Crural Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty for Critical Limb Ischemia
Conclusion: Below the knee percutaneous transluminal angioplasty in patients with end-stage peripheral arterial disease and critical limb ischemia is a safe procedure in relieving critical ischemia, reducing the short-term rate of a major amputation as opposed to best medical treatment alone. Transaortic Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation as a second choice over the Transapical access
Conclusion: The trans transcatheter aortic valve implantation is a considerable choice to transapical approach. Despite a higher risk patient cohort, the clinical outcome is at least comparable to the transapical transcatheter aortic valve implantation, and it can be utilized as a second choice for patients with prohibitive iliac-femoral anatomy for transfemoral access. Feasibility of Day Surgery in Patients With Breast Conservation and Sentinel Node Biopsy: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusion: Day surgery was well received by the patients and their relatives. Day surgery appears as feasible in patients with breast conservation and sentinel node biopsy. (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Surgery)

Comparative Investigation of Postoperative Complications in Patients With Gastroesophageal Junction Cancer Treated With Preoperative Chemotherapy or Surgery Alone
Conclusion: Since perioperative chemotherapy does not appear to increase surgical complications, the future challenges include defining the optimal combination of chemo- and/or radiotherapy, but more importantly also to select the patients who will benefit the most from the different neoadjuvant strategies. Components separation technique is feasible for assisting delayed primary fascial closure of open abdomen
Conclusion: Components separation is a useful method in contributing to successful primary fascial closure in patients treated for open abdomen. Best results were obtained when components separation was performed simultaneously with primary fascial closure at the end of the open abdomen treatment. (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Surgery)

Quality of Life after Ventral Hernia Repair with Endoscopic Component Separation Technique
Conclusions: Operating room time was median 204 min and correlated significantly with the hernia size. A total of 21 postoperative complications occurred in 14 patients. The length of stay was median 6 days and correlated significantly with duration of the operation. Of these, 15 patients participated in late follow-up visit. Two patients experienced recurrent hernias. Postoperative function level, cosmetic satisfaction, and self-estimated physical and mental health improved significantly. Alcohol consumption was significantly reduced. Endoscopic components separation is a reliable method to repair large ventral hernias, a...

Amended Classification of the Open Abdomen
Conclusions: The authors believe that, with these changes, the requirements on a functional and dynamic classification system, useful in both research and training, will be fulfilled. We encourage future investigators to apply the system and report on its merits and constraints. (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Surgery)

Acetabular reconstruction with impaction bone grafting and cemented polyethylene socket in total hip revision arthroplasty
Conclusion: Our results were inferior compared to some previous studies. Impaction bone grafting of acetabular defects in revision total hip arthroplasty may not always provide a reliable bone stock in long-term. (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Surgery)

Optimal time for manipulation of frozen shoulder may be between 6 and 9 months
Conclusions: It seems that timing has statistically significant influence on results of manipulation of the idiopathic frozen shoulder. The best time for manipulation under anesthesia, if non-operative treatment has failed to alleviate pain or limitation of shoulder motion is too cumbersome, might be between 6 and 9 months from the onset of the symptoms. However, the clinical importance of results can be questioned. (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Surgery)
