Post-thrombotic syndrome and compression therapy
Conclusion Prescription of elastic compression stockings for the prevention of post-thrombotic syndrome is now in doubt including long-term compression treatment. Two major issues remain: - We need randomized control trials with long-term outcome to determine if compression is effective to prevent post-thrombotic syndrome according to the precise location of the initial deep venous thrombosis. - Compliance is also a major issue. If compression is efficient how can be improved adherence. (Source: Reviews in Vascular Medicine)

Compression therapy after phlebological treatment
Publication date: September 2015 Source:Reviews in Vascular Medicine, Volume 3, Issue 3 Author(s): Dominic Mühlberger, Björn Burkert, Achim Mumme, Thomas Hummel Compression therapy is a standard use in patients with an advanced chronic venous insufficiency in order to aid venous ulcers or to prevent ulcer recurrence. Nevertheless, there exists only low evidence for the use of compression therapy in patients with uncomplicated varicose veins even though there has been reported a high recommendation. Especially the duration of time remains unclear. The article gives an overview about the actual literature. Over...

Factors associated with progression of the abdominal aortic aneurysm and novel inhibition therapies
Conclusion Antibiotics, statins, anti-inflammatory agents, selenium, vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D), Ace-inhibitors, smoking cessation and well-controlled COPD inhibit AAA growth. Other novel therapies could aid in regression of AAA in future and their long-term results are awaited. (Source: Reviews in Vascular Medicine)

Update on diagnostic and therapeutic features of peripheral artery pseudoaneurysms following orthopedic and traumatologic surgery
Conclusion Geniculate and popliteal artery PSAs are the most frequent vascular complications of orthopedic surgery. They must be evoked when faced with a painful swelling and/or pulsatile mass. Arteriography is an ideal option for confirming the diagnosis. It is often performed with embolization to treat small branches PSAs or with stenting graft for those arising from arterial trunks. Alternatively, surgical ligation or repair was still an option. (Source: Reviews in Vascular Medicine)

Conservative treatment of venous thromboembolism
Publication date: Available online 24 August 2015 Source:Reviews in Vascular Medicine Author(s): Simon Jirát, Michael Marx, Sudheera Magage Venous thromboembolism is a frequent and serious vascular disease that can lead to serious complications. Rational and accurate establishment of the diagnosis enables early treatment that reduces the occurrence and severity of acute and chronic complications. Conservative treatment of this disease has reached a turning point with the introduction of novel direct oral anticoagulants. According to present guidelines, standard treatment with low molecular heparines such as Fond...

New classification of congenital vascular malformations (CVMs)
Publication date: Available online 21 July 2015 Source:Reviews in Vascular Medicine Author(s): Byung-Boong Lee The congenital vascular malformation (CVM) remains a most difficult and confusing diagnostic and therapeutic clinical entity due to the wide range of clinical presentations, degree of severity, location, unpredictable clinical course and erratic response to treatment with high recurrence by its nature/pathogenesis. Despite tremendous efforts to control the CVMs through centuries, it has remained a significant challenge to clinicians and the CVM is often viewed as an enigma among the vascular disorders. Besid...

Duplex ultrasound in the diagnosis of acute leg-swelling
Publication date: Available online 7 June 2015 Source:Reviews in Vascular Medicine Author(s): Erika Mendoza It is quite common in phlebological practice to examine a patient in order to make a differential diagnosis of a leg oedema. The present article presents a review of acute leg swelling according to clinical criteria, and then describes the typical external appearance and the corresponding duplex images with their characteristics. Possible causes for (generally unilateral) acute leg swelling requiring same-day treatment include: thrombosis, which should be diagnosed and treated as quickly as possible; ruptured Ba...

Chronic wounds – recommendations for diagnostics and therapy
The objective of this review is to discuss the diagnostic thoughts and algorithms which are essential when treating patients with chronic wounds, especially chronic leg ulcers. Therapeutic steps in wound care require clear diagnostic investigations to determine causative aetiological factors for chronic wounds and their underlying diseases. Only by knowing the aetiology of an ulcer, the appropriate therapeutic step can be initiated. Diagnostic considerations and a short overview of new and current therapeutic approaches are given in this review. (Source: Reviews in Vascular Medicine)

Prophylaxis and Treatment of Venous Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism in Pregnancy
Publication date: Available online 21 May 2015 Source:Reviews in Vascular Medicine Author(s): Christoph Sucker , Rainer B. Zotz Thrombotic events are a clinically relevant complication of pregnancy and a major cause of pregnancy-related morbidity and death. After risk assessment, antithrombotic prophylaxis with parenteral anticoagulant agents can significantly reduce the manifestation of thrombotic events in pregnancy. Adequate treatment of thrombotic events in pregnancy is crucially important to prevent the progression of thrombosis and the development of pulmonary embolism. In this contribution, we focus on the ass...

Adderall XR and peripheral arterial vasculopathy: A case report and A review of the literature
Publication date: Available online 18 March 2015 Source:Reviews in Vascular Medicine Author(s): Abdulwahab Hritani , Vinay minocha , Ambar Patel , Patrick Antoun Lower extremity peripheral arterial disease is a rare entity in the young population. When diagnosed, mostly it is non-atherosclerosis related. Adderall XR is among the psychostimulant drugs and some case reports in the literature had linked it to arterial vasospasm. We thought to do a literature search investigating the rule of Adderall XR and peripheral arterial vasculopathy. (Source: Reviews in Vascular Medicine)

Acute mesenteric ischaemia—Challenging the multidisciplinary emergency service
Publication date: Available online 25 December 2014 Source:Reviews in Vascular Medicine Author(s): Andras Palffy Addressing acute conditions which represent an interface between emergency general and vascular surgery is challenging. One of these conditions is acute mesenteric ischaemia (AMI). AMI is a rare, rapidly progressing, fatal condition. All types of aetiologies call for very different therapies and outcome among the subgroups differ significantly. While the prognosis of acute on chronic thrombosis of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and non-occlusive mesenteric ischaemia (NOMI) is generally poor, embolisat...
