Endoleak after endovascular aneurysm repair: Current status
Publication date: June 2014 Source:Reviews in Vascular Medicine, Volume 2, Issue 2 Author(s): N. Green , D.A. Sidloff , P.W. Stather , M.J. Bown , R.D. Sayers , E. Choke Since the introduction in 1991 of endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR), through its evolution from a straight graft system to modular component systems with supported prostheses, endoleak has been its Achilles heel. Defined as continued perfusion of the aneurysm sac in spite of endograft deployment and associated with sac expansion, re-intervention and the risk of rupture, here in this review we discuss the different types of endoleak and c...

Peripheral septic arterial embolism of non-cardiac source: A systematic review of literature
Conclusions: NCPSRE should always be suspected in patients who have undergone invasive diagnostic and therapeutic vascular procedures, in patients submitted to radial artery catheter insertion, in cases of aortofemoral bypass followed by gastro-intestinal bleeding, in patients presenting sudden acute ischemia of the lower limb, accompanied by fever, leukocytosis, cutaneous petechiae or purpuric macules or a painful mass associated with a pseudoaneurysm at the site of a catheter insertion. In immunocompromised hosts, NCPSRE may indicate a diagnosis of aspergillosis, and a skin biopsy and chest X-ray should be performed prom...

The coronary slow flow phenomena or “cardiac syndrome Y”: A review
Publication date: Available online 24 July 2014 Source:Reviews in Vascular Medicine Author(s): Ahmad Sharif-Yakan , Dimitar Divchev , Ulrich Trautwein , Christoph A. Nienaber Myocardial infarction in young individuals is a rare event that is seldom due to atherosclerotic coronary artery diseases, except in the setting of familial hyperlipidemias with accelerated atherosclerosis. Potential etiologies of myocardial injury in young patients are various, but non-coronary pathologies causing direct myocardial injury e.g. viral myocarditis, account for the majority of cases. Coronary artery diseases causing myocardial in...

Office based CHIVA: A conceptual variation of CHIVA. The OB CHIVA survey
Publication date: Available online 24 July 2014 Source:Reviews in Vascular Medicine Author(s): F. Passariello , P. Gammuto CHIVA was ideated in 1988 by C Franceschi in France and was aimed to provide a conservative therapy for chronic venous insufficiency. Though CHIVA is based on an interesting hemodynamics model, many people find it time consuming and difficult to understand. In 2009F Passariello and N Morrison performed the first Office Based CHIVA (OB CHIVA) interventions. The aim of the present interview/review is to underline the issues posed by OB CHIVA. We interviewed well-known and recognized experts like BB...

Venous thromboembolism: Diagnosis, treatment and the prevention of long-term complications
Publication date: Available online 23 August 2014 Source:Reviews in Vascular Medicine Author(s): Geoffrey D Barnes , James B Froehlich , Yogendra Kanthi , Thomas W Wakefield Venous thromboembolism encompasses a wide spectrum of illness, including deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Appropriate recognition and treatment is critical to preventing serious recurrent thromboembolism events. Use of clinical prediction tools, such as the modified Well׳s criteria, is critical to rapid and efficient diagnosis of venous thromboembolism. Similarly, use of clinical prediction tools can help to identify patients for...

Shunt use in carotid endarterectomy: A devastating complication
We present a case of proximal dissection of the carotid artery caused by a shunt leading to permanent brain damage complicated by intra-operative and post-operative haemodynamic instability. We also conducted a short survey among UK vascular surgeons which revealed a variation in shunt use and diverse complications. This case report aims to highlight a devastating shunt complication in CEA surgery and the necessity for further research into the routine use of shunts in CEA surgery. Glue for superficial venous ablation
Conclusion Larger observational studies are required to demonstrate efficacy and future randomised controlled trials are required to directly compare venous treatment methods. (Source: Reviews in Vascular Medicine)

Venous stenting after deep venous thrombosis and antithrombotic therapy: A systematic review
Conclusion Antithrombotic therapy does not seem to influence any of the outcomes in patients with venous stenting after DVT: recurrent DVT, patency, post-thrombotic syndrome or restenosis and bleeding. (Source: Reviews in Vascular Medicine)

Endovascular treatment of celiac axis aneurysm with a covered stent: Case presentation and review of the literature
Conclusions Various methods of endovascular treatment of CAA have been reported to be safe and effective. Depending upon anatomy, this report suggests that preservation of blood flow to the hepatic artery with coil embolization of the gastric and splenic arteries is effective in treating this condition while maintaining important foregut blood flow. Gene expression studies in human abdominal aortic aneurysm
Publication date: September 2014 Source:Reviews in Vascular Medicine, Volume 2, Issue 3 Author(s): Mariana Estrelinha , Irene Hinterseher , Helena Kuivaniemi Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), defined as a dilatation of the aorta (>3cm) below the renal arteries, has a complex etiology and it is associated with a risk of rupture. Surgical repair, open or endovascular, is the only available treatment option. Genome-wide studies using microarrays with the purpose of identifying mRNAs and microRNAs involved in the pathogenesis of AAA have been published recently. They provided strong evidence that genes involved in...
