Parental Body Mass Index Is Associated With Adolescent Obesity in Taiwan
In this study we investigated the prevalence of adolescent obesity in Taiwan, determined the influential factors, and compared the prevalence of obesity in our study population with international indices. The cross‐sectional study was an analysis of data from the 2010–2011 Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan, an anthropometric measurement and questionnaire survey of adolescents aged 11–18 years. Our sample was 1,826 adolescents (910 males and 916 females). Data were analyzed using logistic regression modeling. Based on body mass index standards specific to Taiwan norms, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in T...

A Community ‐Engaged Assessment of Barriers and Facilitators to Rapid Stroke Treatment
Abstract Treatment for acute ischemic stroke must be initiated within hours of stroke symptom onset, and the sooner it is administered, the better. In South Carolina, 76% of the population can access expert stroke care, and rural hospitals may provide specialized treatment using telemedicine, but many stroke sufferers seek care too late to achieve full benefit. Using a community‐engaged approach in a southern rural community, we explored barriers and facilitators to early stroke care and implications for improvement. The Community‐Engaged Assessment to facilitate Stroke Elimination (CEASE) study was guided by a communi...

Validation of the Chinese Version of the Functional Outcomes of Sleep Questionnaire ‐10 in Pregnant Women
Abstract We evaluated the psychometric properties of a Mandarin Chinese version of the Functional Outcomes of Sleep Questionnaire‐10 (FOSQ‐10) in pregnant women. A total of 228 first‐trimester pregnant women participated in the study, which was conducted in an outpatient obstetric clinic at a medical center in Taipei, Taiwan. The Chinese version of the FOSQ‐10 demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach alpha = .85), adequate corrected item‐total correlations (from .40 to .67), and acceptable test–retest reliability over 7 days (ICC = .73). Construct validity was supported by exploratory fa...

Women in Transition: Experiences of Health and Health Care for Recently Incarcerated Women Living in Community Corrections Facilities
Abstract Health priorities of women after incarceration remain poorly understood, constraining development of interventions targeted at their health during that time. We explored the experience of health and health care after incarceration in a focused ethnography of 28 women who had been released from prison or jail within the past year and were living in community corrections facilities. The women's outlook on health was rooted in a newfound core optimism, but this was constrained by their pressing health‐related issues; stress and uncertainty; and the pressures of the criminal justice system. These external forces thr...

Sensitive Interviewing in Qualitative Research
Abstract In this paper we focus on important considerations when planning and conducting qualitative interviews on sensitive topics. Drawing on experiences of conducting interviews with dementia caregivers, a framework of essential elements in qualitative interviewing was developed to emphasize study participants’ needs while also providing guidance for researchers. Starting with a definition of sensitive research, the framework includes preparing for interviews, interacting with gatekeepers of vulnerable groups, planning for interview timing, and location, building relationships and conducting therapeutic interactions, ...
