Feasibility of Audio ‐Computer‐Assisted Self‐Interviewing With Color‐Coding and Helper Assistance (ACASI‐H) for Hmong Older Adults
This study's purpose was to test the feasibility of culturally and linguistically adapted audio computer‐assisted self‐interviewing (ACASI) with color‐labeled response categories and helper assistance (ACASI‐H) for collection of health data with Hmong older adults. Thirty dyads (older adult and a helper) completed an ACASI‐H survey with 13 health questions and a face‐to‐face debriefing interview. ACASI‐H survey completion was video‐recorded and reviewed with participants. Video review and debriefing interviews were audio‐recorded and transcribed. Directed and conventional content analyses were used to a...

Longitudinal Outcomes of Home Care in Korea to Manage Pressure Ulcers
In this study, we examined the outcomes of a home care program for pressure ulcers (PrUs) in an economically vulnerable group. The 184 participants were admitted with PrUs and received services from a home care agency in South Korea during a study window of 5 years. The changes in PrU staging over time were analyzed in relation to the agency's home care data and the participants’ health data. At enrollment, approximately 60% had a single ulcer; 40% had two or more. Most patients’ ulcers were at stages 3 or 4, and most patients were bedridden. The maximum odds of reduced ulcer size from one measurement point to the next...

Reclaiming Our Spirits: Development and Pilot Testing of a Health Promotion Intervention for Indigenous Women Who Have Experienced Intimate Partner Violence
Abstract Indigenous women are subjected to high rates of multiple forms of violence, including intimate partner violence (IPV), in the context of ongoing colonization and neo‐colonization. Health promotion interventions for women who experience violence have not been tailored specifically for Indigenous women. Reclaiming Our Spirits (ROS) is a health promotion intervention designed for Indigenous women living in an urban context in Canada. In this paper, we describe the development of the intervention, results of a pilot study, and the revised subsequent intervention. Building on a theory‐based health promotion interve...

Maternal and Child Characteristics Associated With Mother –Child Interaction in One‐Year‐Olds
Abstract Mothers’ interactions with their young children have predicted later child development, behavior, and health, but evidence has been developed mainly in at‐risk clinical samples. An economically and racially diverse sample of pregnant women who were not experiencing a high‐risk pregnancy were recruited to participate in a community‐based, longitudinal study of factors associated with child cognitive and social‐emotional development during the first 3 years. The purpose of the present analysis was to identify associations between the characteristics of 1125 mothers and their 1‐year‐olds and the mothers...

Network Structure of Perinatal Depressive Symptoms in Latinas: Relationship to Stress and Reproductive Biomarkers
Abstract Based on emerging evidence, mood disorders can be plausibly conceptualized as networks of causally interacting symptoms, rather than as latent variables of which symptoms are passive indicators. In an innovative approach in nursing research, we used network analysis to estimate the network structure of 20 perinatal depressive (PND) symptoms. Then, two proof‐of‐principle analyses are presented: Incorporating stress and reproductive biomarkers into the network, and comparing the network structure of PND symptoms between non‐depressed and depressed women. We analyzed data from a cross‐sectional sample of 515 ...

African ‐American Fathers' Perspectives on Facilitators and Barriers to Father–Son Sexual Health Communication
Abstract African‐American males ages 13 through 24 are disproportionately affected by sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), accounting for over half of all HIV infections in this age group in the United States. Clear communication between African‐American parents and their youth about sexual health is associated with higher rates of sexual abstinence, condom use, and intent to delay initiation of sexual intercourse. However, little is known about African‐American fathers' perceptions of what facilitates and inhibits sexual health communication with their preadolescent and adol...

US Military Service Members ’ Reasons for Deciding to Participate in Health Research
Abstract Researchers have reported challenges in recruiting US military service members as research participants. We explored their reasons for participating. Eighteen US military service members who had participated in at least one health‐related research study within the previous 3 years completed semi‐structured individual interviews in person or by telephone, focused on the service members’ past decisions regarding research participation. Service members described participation decisions for 34 individual research experiences in 27 separate studies. Service members’ reasons for participation in research cluster...

Potentially Modifiable Factors Associated With Physical Activity in Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis
This study was a secondary analysis of data collected in the spring of 2012 during the North American Research Committee on Multiple Sclerosis (NARCOMS) Registry. NARCOMS participants were surveyed regarding smoking using questions from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey; disability using the Patient Determined Disease Steps; fatigue, cognition, spasticity, sensory, bladder, vision and hand function using self‐reported Performance Scales; health literacy using the Medical Term Recognition Test; and physical activity using questions from the Health Information National Trends Survey. We used a forward binary l...

Adaptive Modeling: An Approach for Incorporating Nonlinearity in Regression Analyses
Abstract Although regression relationships commonly are treated as linear, this often is not the case. An adaptive approach is described for identifying nonlinear relationships based on power transforms of predictor (or independent) variables and for assessing whether or not relationships are distinctly nonlinear. It is also possible to model adaptively both means and variances of continuous outcome (or dependent) variables and to adaptively power transform positive‐valued continuous outcomes, along with their predictors. Example analyses are provided of data from parents in a nursing study on emotional‐health‐relate...

How Postpartum Women With Depressive Symptoms Manage Sleep Disruption and Fatigue
This study's findings suggest the need to allocate resources and tailor interventions to meet the needs of women who are most vulnerable to the health effects of ongoing persistent severe fatigue, disordered sleep, and sub‐clinical and clinical levels of depressive symptoms. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
