Feasibility and acceptability of a telephone ‐ and face‐to‐face‐delivered counseling intervention for smoking cessation in Dutch patients with coronary heart disease
Intensive behavioral counseling interventions combined with nicotine replacement therapy have increased smoking abstinence rates in cardiac patients, but little is known about their feasibility when initiated upon hospital admission and continued post‐discharge. The current study was an evaluation of the use, appreciation, and fidelity of two post‐discharge counseling interventions designed for cardiac patients to quit smoking that differed in their delivery mode. In a controlled trial with cross‐over randomization at the cardiac unit level, hospitalized smokers in eight cardiac units of eight Dutch hospitals were as...

Parenting stress and development of late preterm infants at 4 months corrected age
We examined relationships between parenting stress of 108 mothers and 108 fathers and development of late preterm infants born at 34 0/7 to 36 6/7 weeks gestation. At 4 months corrected age, mothers and fathers completed the Parenting Stress Index (PSI‐3); mothers were primary caregivers in almost all families and completed the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ‐2) on child development. Mothers reported significantly more stress than fathers on the PSI‐3 Parent Domain. PSI‐3 subscale scores from the Child Domain were significant predictors of mother‐reported infant development as measured by the ASQ‐2 in regres...

Background and design of the symptom burden in end ‐stage liver disease patient‐caregiver dyad study
ABSTRACT Over half a million Americans are affected by cirrhosis, the cause of end‐stage liver disease (ESLD). Little is known about how symptom burden changes over time in adults with ESLD and their informal caregivers, which limits our ability to develop palliative care interventions that can optimize symptom management and quality of life in different patient‐caregiver dyads. The purpose of this article is to describe the background and design of a prospective, longitudinal descriptive study, “Symptom Burden in End‐Stage Liver Disease Patient‐Caregiver Dyads,” which is currently in progress. The study is des...

Knowledge and self ‐care behaviors among patients with heart failure in Jordan
ABSTRACT Knowledge is known to affect self‐care behaviors. However, little is known about the factors that influence self‐care behaviors among patients with heart failure in Jordan. A cross‐sectional descriptive‐correlational design was used to describe the associations between knowledge, sociodemographics, and self‐care behaviors. In a convenience sample of 226 patients with heart failure, the Dutch Heart Failure Scale and Self‐Care of Heart Failure Index (SCHFI) version 6.2 were used to measure knowledge and self‐care behaviors, respectively. The mean heart failure knowledge score was quite low at 5.29. The...

Period Prevalence and Reporting Rate of Needlestick Injuries to Nurses in Iran: A Systematic Review and Meta ‐Analysis
Abstract The purpose of this systematic review and meta‐analysis was to provide a precise estimate of the period prevalence of needlestick injuries (NSI) among nurses working in hospitals in Iran and the reporting rate of NSI to nurse managers. We searched both international (PubMed, Scopus and the Institute for Scientific Information) and Iranian (Scientific Information Database, Iranmedex and Magiran) scientific databases to find studies published from 2000 to 2016 of NSI among Iranian nurses. The following keywords in Persian and English were used: “needle‐stick” or “needle stick” or “needlestick,” with ...

Ethical and Practical Realities of Using Letters for Recruitment in Bereavement Research
Abstract Recruitment of participants into bereavement research may present many challenges for the research team. At present, there is little consensus for researchers and ethics committees on the most appropriate method of recruitment. There is some evidence that participants prefer to be contacted about research studies via letters. However, recruitment involving the use of a letter can occur in a number of ways, each with ethical and practical benefits and limitations. In a study of the experiences of bereaved parents, we used letters in three ways: direct mailing from the research team with an opt‐out option; permiss...

Behavioral Characteristics and Cardiovascular Disease Risks Associated With Insomnia and Sleep Quality Among Middle ‐Aged Women in South Korea
In this study directed by Social Cognitive Theory, we examined the personal, behavioral, socio‐environmental, and CVD risk factors associated with sleep characteristics (insomnia and sleep quality) in middle‐aged women using a cross‐sectional design. The study instruments included the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES‐D), and measures of social support and behavioral characteristics. Blood was drawn to assess serum glucose and lipids, and BMI was measured. Data were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression and...

Timing for the Introduction of Cycled Light for Extremely Preterm Infants: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Abstract Day‐night cycled light improves health outcomes in preterm infants, yet the best time to institute cycled light is unclear. The hypothesis of this study was that extremely preterm infants receiving early cycled light would have better health and developmental outcomes than infants receiving late cycled light. Infants born at ≤28 weeks gestation were randomly assigned to early cycled light (ECL) starting at 28 weeks postmenstrual age [PMA] or late cycled light (LCL), starting at 36 weeks PMA. Daylight was 200–600 lux and night was 5–30 lux. Primary outcomes were weight over time and length of hospitalizatio...

Evaluation of Cholesterol as a Biomarker for Suicidality in a Veteran Sample
The objective of this research was to evaluate total cholesterol as a biological marker for suicidality in a sample of US military veterans. The study population consisted of veterans who received care at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) and were included in the Suicide Prevention Coordinator's database for having suicidal ideation with evidence of escalating intent, a documented suicide attempt, or committed suicide between 2009 and 2015. The veterans’ medical data were obtained from the facility's computerized patient record system. The final sample was 188 observations from 128 unique veterans. V...
