Causes of hospitalisation and prognosis in patients with cardiovascular diseases - secular trends 2006-2014. SILesian CARDiovascular (SILCARD) database covering a population of 4.6 million subjects.
CONCLUSIONS    Over the period between 2006 and 2014, in-hospital and 12-month mortality remained constant, with a trend for decline in many areas, but considerable space for improvement. PMID: 27650214 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Polskie Archiwum Medycyny Wewnetrznej)

The impact of high density lipoprotein on oxidant-antioxidant balance in healthy elderly subjects.
CONCLUSIONS    HDL-C which is known to describe HDL anti-atherogenic function, including antioxidant properties, might reflect increasing oxidative stress in otherwise healthy elderly individuals. PMID: 27650303 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Polskie Archiwum Medycyny Wewnetrznej)

Optimizing the safety of treatment for venous thromboembolism in the era of the direct oral anticoagulants.
Authors: Weitz JI, Jaffer IH Abstract The direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are rapidly replacing vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) for treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE). The DOACs include dabigatran, which inhibits thrombin, and rivaroxaban, apixaban and edoxaban, which inhibit factor Xa. When compared with conventional VTE treatment consisting of a parenteral anticoagulant followed by a VKA, the DOACs were as effective for prevention of recurrence, but were associated with less bleeding. With similar efficacy, better safety and the convenience of fixed dosing without the need for routine coagulation ...

Association between adjunctive metformin therapy in young type 1 diabetes patients with excess body fat and reduction of carotid intima-media thickness.
CONCLUSIONS    Additional use of metformin in young type 1 diabetic patients with excess body fat leads to a significant reduction of mean IMT in the common carotid artery. Concentrations of CEL and Lp-PLA2 were significantly increased in both study arms despite improved glucose metabolism. Comparison of the basophil activation test versus the nasal provocation test in establishing eligibility for specific immunotherapy.
CONCLUSIONS    If there are contraindications to performing the NPT, BAT may be regarded as an alternative in establishing patients' eligibility for SIT. The optimal concentrations of allergen preparations are 500 and 50 SBU. Both SI and BR are good indicators of basophil activation. Current challenges in antihypertensive treatment in the elderly.
Authors: Imprialos KP, Boutari C, Stavropoulos K, Doumas M, Athyros VG, Karagiannis AI Abstract Arterial hypertension affects more than 25% of the global population, and its prevalence is increasing with age. Arterial stiffening occurs with aging and results in a pattern of increased systolic and decreased diastolic blood pressure (BP). In the elderly population, elevated BP has been related with increased cardiovascular risk. Trials on this population have shown great benefits for morbidity and mortality from reducing systolic BP (SBP) levels to less than 150 mmHg. Most guidelines for the management of el...

Adverse events associated with the use of direct-acting oral anticoagulants in clinical practice: beyond bleeding complications.
Authors: Raschi E, Bianchin M, Ageno W, De Ponti R, De Ponti F Abstract Non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants, also known as direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), have entered the market in 2008 with the expected breakthrough potential of circumventing limitations related to treatment with vitamin K antagonists (eg, warfarin) by virtue of their pharmacological properties. Although data derived from premarketing randomized clinical trials have largely demonstrated the clinical benefit of DOACs, especially in terms of reduced risk of intracranial bleeding, it is important to monitor the safety in the postmark...
