Narrative Review on the Effect of Shockwave Treatment for Management of Upper and Lower Extremity Musculoskeletal Conditions
Publication date: Available online 1 June 2018Source: PM&RAuthor(s): Julia M. Reilly, Eric Bluman, Adam S. TenfordeAbstractExtracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a technology that was first introduced into clinical practice in 1982 for urologic conditions. Subsequent clinical applications in musculoskeletal conditions have been described in treatment of plantar fasciopathy, both upper and lower extremity tendinopathies, greater trochanteric pain syndrome, medial tibial stress syndrome, management of nonunion fractures, and joint disease including avascular necrosis. The aim of this review is to summarize the current un...

Nonoperative Management of a Severe Proximal Rectus Femoris Musculotendinous Injury in a Recreational Athlete: A Case Report
This report describes a severe injury to the proximal rectus femoris (RF) muscle in a 37-year-old recreational athlete. This injury is a relatively rare occurrence in both the general and elite athletic populations. Acute and long-term imaging and functional outcomes are described. This athlete was able to return to full activity without surgical intervention. Follow-up imaging demonstrated gross healing of both complete (or near complete) muscle and tendon tears.Level of Evidence▪▪▪ (Source: PMandR)

Cytotoxic Effects of Nonionic Iodinated Contrast Agent on Human Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
ConclusionsCM (Omnipaque300) is cytotoxic to MSCs in a time-and concentration-dependent manner. Hence, the concentration of CM that accompanies MSC injections should be carefully considered during MSC therapy for disk-degenerative diseases. (Source: PMandR)

Aphonogelia After Recovery From Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: A Case Report
Publication date: Available online 1 June 2018Source: PM&RAuthor(s): Scott A. McLeod, Alva Lam, Adam Spencer, Xing-Chang Wei, Vithya GnanakumarAbstractDuring rehabilitation from a severe traumatic brain injury, a 16-year-old girl became aware that she had lost the ability to laugh out loud. This rare phenomenon previously has been described as “aphonogelia.” A discussion of therapeutic avenues that were explored with this patient is presented and is the first case, to our knowledge, of aphonogelia after a traumatic brain injury. Septic Sacroiliitis in a 53-Year-Old Adult: A Case Report
Publication date: Available online 1 June 2018Source: PM&RAuthor(s): Jesse Lou, Eric B. Smith, Michael J. Mehnert, Jeremy I. SimonAbstractA 53-year-old woman with no significant medical history presented with 10/10 right buttock pain that radiated to the right groin. With no reported recent injury, the absence of fever, and no identifiable risk factors, an infectious etiology, including septic sacroiliitis (SSI), is at the end spectrum of the differential. SSI is a rare condition with nonspecific findings that can lead to major complications, including death. To our knowledge, there are only 4 recent major literature revie...

Functional Outcomes of Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation in Patients With Chronic Graft-Versus-Host Disease
ConclusionsDespite achieving more modest functional gains than patients with burn injuries, patients with cGVHD improved in function after acute inpatient rehabilitation. If replicated in larger studies, patients with functional impairment from cGVHD can be considered for inpatient rehabilitation. Future work should also determine minimal clinically important differences in function gain from inpatient rehabilitation for patients with cGVHD.Level of EvidenceII (Source: PMandR)
