Dynamic Sonographic Visualization of an Occult Posterior Lateral Meniscocapsular Separation: A Case Report
We report a case of an 18-year-old female softball catcher with unrevealing magnetic resonance imaging despite continued left knee locking and discomfort with deep squatting. Meniscocapsular separation was revealed only on dynamic sonographic exam, where knee flexion revealed a 3.1-mm gap that developed between the capsule and peripheral meniscus. Arthroscopy confirmed the sonographic findings, and repair resulted in complete resolution of symptoms. This case highlights the utility of dynamic diagnostic sonography in a rare case of posterior lateral meniscocapsular separation. (Source: PMandR)

Effect of Wheelchair Stroke Pattern on Upper Extremity Muscle Fatigue
ConclusionsThese data demonstrate that the SC wheelchair propulsion pattern appears to be more fatiguing to shoulder muscles than the P propulsion pattern. However, more data would need to be collected to find a significant difference.Level of Evidence▪▪▪ (Source: PMandR)

Stiff Person Syndrome With Evidence of Nonspecific Focal Myositis Secondary to Sustained Muscle Contraction: A Case Report
We report the case of a 36-year-old woman with SPS in association with nonspecific focal myositis secondary to sustained muscle contraction. She presented with stiffness and pain in her extremities, and diazepam and baclofen were ineffective. With immunotherapy, her serum creatinine kinase levels reduced; however, her clinical symptoms progressively worsened. (Source: PMandR)

Lumbar Epidural Varix Causing Radicular Pain: A Case Report and Differential Diagnosis of Lumbar Cystic Lesions
We report a case of a 36-year-old woman presenting with lumbar radicular pain caused by a lumbar epidural varix. Lumbar MRI revealed a cystic lesion in the ventral epidural space posterior to the right L4 body. Surgery was conducted and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of an epidural varix. Lumbar epidural varices and other lumbar cystic lesions can commonly cause radicular pain. Physicians will benefit from increased awareness of epidural varices as a cause of lumbosacral radicular pain and the associated radiologic findings supporting differential diagnosis. In particular, careful interpretation of MRI scans may he...

Differences in Knee and Hip Adduction and Hip Muscle Activation in Runners With and Without Iliotibial Band Syndrome
ConclusionThe results of this study suggest that lateral knee pain in runners localized to the distal iliotibial band is associated with increased knee adduction at 30 minutes. Increased tensor fasciae latae muscle activation at three minutes is noted, but more investigation is needed to better understand the clinical meaning. These findings are consistent with but not conclusive evidence supporting the theory that neuromuscular factors of the hip muscles may contribute to increased knee adduction in runners with iliotibial band syndrome. We advise caution using these findings to support treatments intended to modify tenso...

Stenosis and Neurological Level Discrepancies in Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy
ConclusionsLower motor neuron involvement in CSM is usually not concordant with the structural lesion. For accurate diagnosis and treatment, physicians should recognize that myotomal involvement in CSM is often due to canal stenosis one to four levels above the lesion. (Source: PMandR)

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Musculoskeletal Pain in Keyboard Musicians: A Systematic Review
ConclusionKeyboard musicians presented a high prevalence of musculoskeletal pain, especially in the upper extremity regions of the body. Female, ageing, playing behaviors, and sedentary lifestyle showed an increased likelihood to report musculoskeletal pain.Level of evidenceLevel II (Source: PMandR)

The Possible Effect of Oxytocin in Postpartum Recovery From a Stroke: A Case Report
Publication date: Available online 26 April 2018Source: PM&RAuthor(s): Han Gil Seo, Hyun Haeng Lee, Byung-Mo OhAbstractPregnancy is a risk factor for stroke in young women, but the effect of delivery on recovery and rehabilitation after stroke has not been elucidated in pregnant patients with stroke. This case report presents a pregnant patient with stroke who recovered successfully after cesarean delivery during rehabilitation. The possible effect of oxytocin is discussed as a factor promoting recovery from stroke. (Source: PMandR)

The Effect of Arch Drop on Tibial Rotation and Tibiofemoral Contact Stress in Postpartum Women
ConclusionsArch drop causes internal tibial rotation, resulting in a shift in the tibiofemoral articulation. An associated increase in contact stress was not detected. Internal rotation of the tibia increases stress on the anterior cruciate ligament and menisci, potentially explaining the greater prevalence of knee disorders in postpartum women. (Source: PMandR)

Removable Rigid Dressings for Postoperative Management of Transtibial Amputations: A Review of Published Evidence
Publication date: May 2018Source: PM&R, Volume 10, Issue 5Author(s): James P. Reichmann, Phillip M. Stevens, John Rheinstein, Christopher D. KreulenAbstractForty years of clinical experience and peer-reviewed research studies support the use of nonweight-bearing removable rigid dressings (RRDs) as an effective means of postoperative management of transtibial amputations. We reviewed the published medical evidence regarding the use of RRDs as a postoperative management strategy, culminating in an evidence-based practice recommendation. Published peer-reviewed literature on the topic was searched and classified by level of e...

Participant-Reported Benefits of Involvement in an Adaptive Sports Program: A Qualitative Study
ConclusionsTo gain the benefits of participation, athletes overcame significant barriers, several of which may be modifiable, including transportation and difficult-to-find information about program offerings. The importance of community and raising awareness of athletes’ own abilities suggests a key role for mentorship. Our study contributes to the understanding of experiential aspects that motivate participation in adaptive sports.Level of EvidenceIV (Source: PMandR)
