Short term impact of physical activity vs. sedentary behavior on preschoolers' cognitive functions
Conclusions Short-term executive functioning was generally similar in preschoolers after sedentary versus physically active periods. Given the other known benefits of physical activity, active play promotion should be supported in early childhood education settings. (Source: Mental Health and Physical Activity)

Anxiety sensitivity and fear of exercise in patients attending cardiac rehabilitation
Conclusions Elevated anxiety sensitivity is common in patients enrolled in CR and is associated with greater fears of negative consequences from exercise, which was a medium-sized effect. Anxiety sensitivity may be an important clinical target in CR to decrease patients’ fear about bodily sensations to promote exercise engagement, and in turn, enhance CR outcomes. Effects of simultaneous aerobic and cognitive training on executive functions, cardiovascular fitness and functional abilities in older adults with mild cognitive impairment
Publication date: Available online 11 June 2018 Source:Mental Health and Physical Activity Author(s): Laure Combourieu Donnezan, Alexandra Perrot, Sylvie Belleville, Frédéric Bloch, Gilles Kemoun People with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) experience cognitive decline and reduction in their motor capacities. Several programs have used physical or cognitive stimulation with encouraging results for the cognitive performances; however, none have studied both together. The goal of this study is to compare the benefits of simultaneous training with the results of single cognitive and physical training on executive, car...

Mental Health and Physical Activity (MENPA): Celebrating the first decade
Publication date: Available online 7 June 2018 Source:Mental Health and Physical Activity Author(s): Adrian H. Taylor, Guy Faulkner Mental Health and Physical Activity was established with five broad aims. As co-founding editors in chief we have had the freedom to develop and steer the journal independently of any organisation or learned society. This has been both a positive and at times a negative as we sought to build the journal’s reputation and increase the number of submissions in isolation. We do now feel that we are really starting to see the benefits of having a wide following and the journal’s reputation ...

In inpatient substance use disorder treatment in Switzerland, exercise programmes are implemented but not evaluated – A missed opportunity for improving treatment
Conclusion Exercise and sport programmes are integrated into the treatment plans of at least half of the identified inpatient substance use disorder treatment clinics in Switzerland; however, while participation in these programmes is often compulsory, their effects are not evaluated. There is an urgent need to develop an evaluation process for the potential effects of exercise participation on substance use-related outcomes. (Source: Mental Health and Physical Activity)

Offering physical activity advice to people with serious mental illness: The beliefs of mental health professionals
Conclusions Offering physical activity advice to people with SMIs as part of an individualised care plan in a community setting was viewed as beneficial by healthcare workers. However, barriers exist that may impede advice giving. The TPB framework is useful for exploring and describing these characteristics. Further quantitative research is needed to examine relationships between the beliefs identified in this study and advice giving behaviour. (Source: Mental Health and Physical Activity)

Sleep quality in patients with schizophrenia: The relevance of physical activity
Publication date: Available online 20 April 2018 Source:Mental Health and Physical Activity Author(s): Raquel Costa, Tânia Bastos, Michel Probst, André Seabra, Estela Vilhena, Rui Corredeira Patients with schizophrenia experience poor sleep quality that affects their physical and mental health. In the general population, physical activity (PA) is considered as a beneficial non-pharmacological intervention for sleep quality. However, there is a lack of research concerning its implications in the sleep quality of patients with schizophrenia. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the associations betwee...

Smartphone-based passive assessment of mobility in depression: Challenges and opportunities
Publication date: Available online 18 April 2018 Source:Mental Health and Physical Activity Author(s): Brenna N. Renn, Abhishek Pratap, David C. Atkins, Sean D. Mooney, Patricia A. Areán Advances in technology have ushered in exciting potential for smartphone sensors to inform mental health care. This commentary addresses the practical challenges of collecting smartphone-based physical activity data. Using data (N = 353) from a large scale, fully remote randomized clinical trial for depression, we discuss findings and limitations associated with using passively collected mobility data to make inferences about d...

The associations of self-reported physical fitness and physical activity with sleep quality in young adults: A population-based study
Conclusion Our results show that “lower” levels of physical fitness and “insufficient” physical activity are associated with “poor” sleep quality in a large sample of young adults. Thus, special policies and strategies that enhance physical fitness and physical activity as protective factors are warranted. (Source: Mental Health and Physical Activity)

The longitudinal association between the context of physical activity and mental health in early adulthood
This study examined the associations between the context in which physical activity (PA) is undertaken (team sports, informal group, individual PA), and each of positive mental health, anxiety symptoms and depressive symptoms. It also investigated whether social connectedness or PA volume mediate these associations. A total of 460 students (62.4% female; mean age at baseline = 18.5, SD 2.6) completed questionnaires at baseline and at follow-up 6 months later. Multivariate linear regression was used to model the associations between PA context at baseline and each outcome at follow-up controlling for sex, age, perceived...

A qualitative investigation of the perceived influence of adolescents ’ motivation on relationships between domain-specific physical activity and positive and negative affect
Conclusions Compared to other life domains, more adolescents associate leisure-time physical activity with positive affect. However, promoting more autonomous motivation may enhance the effect of physical activity on wellbeing in other domains, such as active travel and physical education. Exploring the role of sedentary behavior and physical activity in depression and anxiety symptom severity among patients with substance use disorders
This study also sought to determine the extent to which physical activity and sedentary behavior relate to depression and anxiety symptom severity above and beyond an established transdiagnostic risk factor for depression and anxiety, emotion dysregulation. A sample of 41 patients from a residential SUD treatment facility completed a variety of self-report measures focused on physical activity, sedentary behavior, emotion dysregulation, and depression and anxiety symptom severity. Physical activity, but not sedentary behavior, was found to significantly predict depression symptom severity above and beyond emotion dysregula...
