Greater specificity of activity memories in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis: Implications for exercise-based treatment
ConclusionCFS/ME individuals’ autobiographical memory for activity differs both from healthy individuals and the typical pattern found in depression. The effect of specific activity memories could be utilized in exercise-based treatment of CFS/ME. (Source: Mental Health and Physical Activity)

A single bout of either sprint interval training or moderate intensity continuous training reduces anxiety sensitivity: A randomized controlled trial
We examined the effects of a single session of either SIT or MICT on AS, distress tolerance (DT), and intolerance of uncertainty (IU). A total of 56 participants were randomized into either a 50-min MICT group, a 10-min SIT group, or a waitlist control group. AS, DT, and IU were measured at baseline, post-exercise session, and at 3-day and 7-day follow-ups. Both exercise groups experienced similar reductions in AS; however, these changes appeared attributable to reductions across different AS dimensions. Specifically, significant reductions in the AS Physical Concerns were noted in the SIT group whereas the MICT group expe...

Mental health practitioners’ reported barriers to prescription of exercise for mental health consumers
Publication date: March 2018Source: Mental Health and Physical Activity, Volume 14Author(s): Kirsten Way, Lee Kannis-Dymand, Michele Lastella, Geoff P. LovellAbstractExercise is an effective evidenced-based intervention for a range of mental health conditions, however sparse research has investigated the exercise prescription behaviours of mental health practitioners as a collective, and the barriers faced in prescribing exercise for mental health. A self-report survey was completed online by 325 mental health practitioners to identify how often they prescribe exercise for various conditions and explore their perceived bar...

The longitudinal association between the context of physical activity and mental health in early adulthood
This study examined the associations between the context in which physical activity (PA) is undertaken (team sports, informal group, individual PA), and each of positive mental health, anxiety symptoms and depressive symptoms. It also investigated whether social connectedness or PA volume mediate these associations. A total of 460 students (62.4% female; mean age at baseline = 18.5, SD 2.6) completed questionnaires at baseline and at follow-up 6 months later. Multivariate linear regression was used to model the associations between PA context at baseline and each outcome at follow-up controlling for sex, age, perceived...

Mental Health and Physical Activity (MENPA): Celebrating the first decade
Publication date: Available online 7 June 2018Source: Mental Health and Physical ActivityAuthor(s): Adrian H. Taylor, Guy FaulknerSummaryMental Health and Physical Activity was established with five broad aims. As co-founding editors in chief we have had the freedom to develop and steer the journal independently of any organisation or learned society. This has been both a positive and at times a negative as we sought to build the journal’s reputation and increase the number of submissions in isolation. We do now feel that we are really starting to see the benefits of having a wide following and the journal’s reputation...

Effects of simultaneous aerobic and cognitive training on executive functions, cardiovascular fitness and functional abilities in older adults with mild cognitive impairment
Publication date: Available online 11 June 2018Source: Mental Health and Physical ActivityAuthor(s): Laure Combourieu Donnezan, Alexandra Perrot, Sylvie Belleville, Frédéric Bloch, Gilles KemounAbstractPeople with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) experience cognitive decline and reduction in their motor capacities. Several programs have used physical or cognitive stimulation with encouraging results for the cognitive performances; however, none have studied both together. The goal of this study is to compare the benefits of simultaneous training with the results of single cognitive and physical training on executive, card...

Offering physical activity advice to people with serious mental illness: The beliefs of mental health professionals
ConclusionsOffering physical activity advice to people with SMIs as part of an individualised care plan in a community setting was viewed as beneficial by healthcare workers. However, barriers exist that may impede advice giving. The TPB framework is useful for exploring and describing these characteristics. Further quantitative research is needed to examine relationships between the beliefs identified in this study and advice giving behaviour. (Source: Mental Health and Physical Activity)

Anxiety sensitivity and fear of exercise in patients attending cardiac rehabilitation
ConclusionsElevated anxiety sensitivity is common in patients enrolled in CR and is associated with greater fears of negative consequences from exercise. Anxiety sensitivity may be an important clinical target in CR to decrease patients’ fears about bodily sensations to promote exercise engagement, and in turn, enhance CR outcomes. Short term impact of physical activity vs. sedentary behavior on preschoolers' cognitive functions
ConclusionsShort-term executive functioning was generally similar in preschoolers after sedentary versus physically active periods. Given the other known benefits of physical activity, active play promotion should be supported in early childhood education settings. (Source: Mental Health and Physical Activity)

In inpatient substance use disorder treatment in Switzerland, exercise programmes are implemented but not evaluated – A missed opportunity for improving treatment
ConclusionExercise and sport programmes are integrated into the treatment plans of at least half of the identified inpatient substance use disorder treatment clinics in Switzerland; however, while participation in these programmes is often compulsory, their effects are not evaluated. There is an urgent need to develop an evaluation process for the potential effects of exercise participation on substance use-related outcomes. (Source: Mental Health and Physical Activity)

Does level of leisure time physical activity, in a sample of patients with depression, predict health care utilization over a subsequent 5-year period? Findings from a Finnish cohort study
ConclusionsAccording to this study, the level of LTPA in baseline does not predict the future use of health care services among depressed patients in Finnish adult population. Although higher levels of LTPA are positively associated with many health-related factors, promoting PA alone is not enough when aiming to manage and modify HCU among depressed patients.
