A systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of exercise on psychosocial outcomes in adults with obesity: A call for more research
ConclusionsCurrent evidence does not suggest exercise is successful in significantly enhancing psychosocial health in adults with obesity. Limitations associated with the reviewed studies could have biased the results toward a lack of effect. Additional high-quality RCTs are needed to improve evidence-based knowledge. The relationships between off-job physical activity and vigor at work across time: Testing for reciprocity
ConclusionThe findings suggest that high vigor at work has the potential to prompt individuals to engage in off-job MVPA. Conversely, in the present study high levels of off-job MVPA were not linked to enhanced vigor at work. As a result, strategies designed to enhance vigor at work may result in higher levels of off-job MVPA and in the long term to the adoption of a healthy lifestyle beneficial for physical and mental health. Psychosocial health is associated with objectively assessed sedentary time and light intensity physical activity among lung cancer survivors
ConclusionsSedentary time and light intensity physical activity were significantly associated with some psychosocial health outcomes. Reducing sedentary time and increasing light intensity physical activity may be a more appropriate recommendation for many lung cancer survivors given their older age, poorer functional status, and reduced pulmonary capacity. Exploring the role of sedentary behavior and physical activity in depression and anxiety symptom severity among patients with substance use disorders
This study also sought to determine the extent to which physical activity and sedentary behavior relate to depression and anxiety symptom severity above and beyond an established transdiagnostic risk factor for depression and anxiety, emotion dysregulation. A sample of 41 patients from a residential SUD treatment facility completed a variety of self-report measures focused on physical activity, sedentary behavior, emotion dysregulation, and depression and anxiety symptom severity. Physical activity, but not sedentary behavior, was found to significantly predict depression symptom severity above and beyond emotion dysregula...

A qualitative investigation of the perceived influence of adolescents’ motivation on relationships between domain-specific physical activity and positive and negative affect
ConclusionsCompared to other life domains, more adolescents associate leisure-time physical activity with positive affect. However, promoting more autonomous motivation may enhance the effect of physical activity on wellbeing in other domains, such as active travel and physical education. Sleep quality in patients with schizophrenia: The relevance of physical activity
Publication date: March 2018Source: Mental Health and Physical Activity, Volume 14Author(s): Raquel Costa, Tânia Bastos, Michel Probst, André Seabra, Estela Vilhena, Rui CorredeiraAbstractPatients with schizophrenia experience poor sleep quality that affects their physical and mental health. In the general population, physical activity (PA) is considered as a beneficial non-pharmacological intervention for sleep quality. However, there is a lack of research concerning its implications in the sleep quality of patients with schizophrenia. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the associations between PA levels...

Reciprocal relationship between sedentary behavior and mood in young adults over one-year duration

However, the stronger association is mood status predicting time spent in SED. (Source: Mental Health and Physical Activity)

Improving children's physical self-perception through a school-based physical activity intervention: The Move for Well-being in School study
ConclusionsDespite limited overall intervention effects on self-perceived competence and self-worth, the intervention appeared to diminish the gap between those groups with most and those with least self-confidence. Even though many of the new activities and approaches were implemented, some teachers were challenged to create a positive social climate. (Source: Mental Health and Physical Activity)

Mediators of aggression in a school-based physical activity intervention for low-income adolescent boys

The associations of self-reported physical fitness and physical activity with sleep quality in young adults: A population-based study
ConclusionOur results show that “lower” levels of physical fitness and “insufficient” physical activity are associated with “poor” sleep quality in a large sample of young adults. Thus, special policies and strategies that enhance physical fitness and physical activity as protective factors are warranted. (Source: Mental Health and Physical Activity)

Stress and self-esteem in adolescence predict physical activity and sedentary behavior in adulthood
Publication date: March 2018Source: Mental Health and Physical Activity, Volume 14Author(s): Jocelyn Smith CarterAbstractHigh levels of stress, high levels of sedentary behavior (SB), and low levels of physical activity (PA) contribute to risk for obesity. Cross-sectional studies suggest that youth exposed to more stressors are less likely to be physically active and more likely to be sedentary. However, it is not yet clear whether stressors in adolescence predict activity patterns into adulthood or protective factors mitigate the risk of stress exposure. The current study used data from the National Longitudinal Study of ...
