Passive Suicide Ideation Among Older Adults in Europe: A Multilevel Regression Analysis of Individual and Societal Determinants in 12 Countries (SHARE)
Discussion: Cross-national variation in old-age PSI is mostly attributable to individual-level determinants and compositional differences, but there is also evidence for contextual effects of country-level characteristics. Suicide prevention programs should be intensified in high-risk countries and attitudes toward suicide should be addressed in information campaigns. Health Conditions and Passive Suicidal Ideation in the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe
Discussion: Certain specific health conditions, as well as total number of conditions, are associated with passive suicidal ideation in middle age and older adulthood. Health is a critical risk factor for suicidal ideation in late life and should be further studied in this particularly at-risk population. Marianismo and Caregiving Role Beliefs Among U.S.-Born and Immigrant Mexican Women
We examined the personal experiences of U.S-born and immigrant Mexican female caregivers to identify how these 2 groups differed in their views of the caregiver role. Methods: We conducted 1-time in-depth interviews with 44 caregivers living in Southern California. Our study was guided by marianismo, a traditional role occupied by women in the Mexican family. We analyzed data from a grounded theory approach involving the constant comparative method to refine and categorize the data. Results: The majority of all caregivers had similar views about caregiving as an undertaking by choice, and almost all caregivers engaged in...

Childhood Adversity and Mens Relationships in Adulthood: Life Course Processes and Racial Disadvantage
Discussion: A life course perspective directs attention to the early life origins of cumulative patterns of social disadvantage, patterns that extend to later life. Our findings suggest psychosocial and behavioral pathways through which early life adversity may constrain and strain men’s relationships, possibly contributing to racial inequality in family relationships across the life span. Childhood Conditions and Multimorbidity Among Older Adults
Discussion: This research adds to the evidence that early life conditions have a lasting influence on adult health, and that their influence may be independent of adult health and SES. (Source: Journals of Gerontology: Series B Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences)

Intergenerational Relations in Older Stepfamilies: A Comparison of France, Germany, and Russia
Discussion. The observed cross-national differences are proposed to result from different economic incentives to form a stepfamily, translating into a stronger "functional" basis of stepfamily intergenerational relations in the Russian context. Intraindividual Reaction Time Variability, Falls, and Gait in Old Age: A Systematic Review
Discussion: Across studies, IIV measures were consistently associated with falls in older persons and demonstrated some potential in relation to gait. IIV metrics may, therefore, have considerable potential in clinical contexts and supplement existing test batteries in the assessment of falls risk and gait impairment in older populations. Effects of Preretirement Work Complexity and Postretirement Leisure Activity on Cognitive Aging
We examined the influence of postretirement leisure activity on longitudinal associations between work complexity in main lifetime occupation and trajectories of cognitive change before and after retirement. Methods: Information on complexity of work with data, people, and things, leisure activity participation in older adulthood, and four cognitive factors (verbal, spatial, memory, and speed) was available from 421 individuals in the longitudinal Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging. Participants were followed for an average of 14.2 years (SD = 7.1 years) and up to 23 years across eight cognitive assessments. Most of the...
