Cognitive Function in Low-Income and Low-Literacy Settings: Validation of the Tablet-Based Oxford Cognitive Screen in the Health and Aging in Africa: A Longitudinal Study of an INDEPTH Community in South Africa (HAALSI)
We report measure distributions, construct and external validity of the OCS-Plus. Results: OCS-Plus has excellent construct and external validity. Intra-class correlations between similar basic measures of orientation in OCS-Plus and in HAALSI assessments was 0.79, and groups of people performing well on the OCS-Plus verbal memory also showed superior performance on HAALSI verbal memory. The OCS-Plus scores showed consistent associations with age and education and domain-specific associations with alcohol and depression. Younger respondents and the more educated did better on all assessments. Discussion: The OCS-Plus rep...

Lifecourse Activity Participation From Early, Mid, and Later Adulthood as Determinants of Cognitive Aging: The Lothian Birth Cohort 1921
Discussion: The findings support a lifecourse approach in identifying determinants of cognitive aging; leisure and physical activity during different periods of adulthood may enhance cognitive abilities or reduce decline. Better Cognition in New Birth Cohorts of 70 Year Olds, But Greater Decline Thereafter
Discussion: These findings provide strong evidence for substantial birth cohort effects in cognition in older ages and emphasize the importance of life long environmental factors in shaping cognitive aging trajectories. Inferences from cognitive testing, and standardization of test scores, in elderly populations must take into account the substantial birth cohort differences. Contributions of the Individual Differences Approach to Cognitive Aging
Discussion: Although the primary focus of much of the research in cognitive aging has been on mean differences between people of different ages, people differ in many respects besides age. A fundamental assumption of the individual differences perspective is that at least some of those differences may be informative about the nature, and causes, of the relations between age and cognitive functioning. Racial Differences in the Effects of Neighborhood Disadvantage on Residential Mobility in Later Life
Discussion: Neighborhood disadvantage may promote local mobility by undermining person–environment fit. Racial differences in access to better neighborhoods persist in later life. Future research should explore how older adults optimize person–environment fit in the face of neighborhood disadvantage when the possibility of relocation to a better neighborhood may be restricted. Functioning, Forgetting, or Failing Health: Which Factors Are Associated With a Community-Based Move Among Older Adults?
Discussion: Although some health conditions precipitate moves among middle-aged and older adults, others do not. This work has important implications for understanding the role of different aspects of health and functioning in the likelihood of migration among older adults. Relocation and Social Support Among Older Adults in Rural China
This study expands on previous research on the implications of relocation in China by examining the impact of rural elders’ relocation on the perceived availability of emotional, instrumental, and financial support. Methods: Data were drawn from the Ankang Study of Aging and Health conducted with a representative sample of 1,062 rural residents aged 60 and over living in Ankang, China. Two-stage probit and least squares regression models assessed the impact of relocation on familial and nonfamilial emotional, instrumental, and financial support. Results: Relocation was negatively associated with the number of socia...
