Crossed Aphasia in a Patient with Anaplastic Astrocytoma of the Non-Dominant Hemisphere
Aphasia describes a spectrum of speech impairments due to damage in the language centers of the brain. Insult to the inferior frontal gyrus of the dominant cerebral hemisphere results in Broca ' s aphasia - the inability to produce fluent speech. The left cerebral hemisphere has historically been considered the dominant side, a characteristic long presumed to be related to a person ' s " handedness " . However, recent studies utilizing fMRI have shown that right hemispheric dominance occurs more frequently than previously proposed and despite a person ' s handedness. Here we present a case of a right-handed patient with Br...

Vascular Eagle's Syndrome: Two Cases Illustrating Distinct Mechanisms of Cerebral Ischemia
We report two cases of Vascular Eagle ' s Syndrome, which demonstrate two distinct mechanisms of cerebral ischemia. In the first case, hemodynamic transient cerebral ischemia arose as a direct result of compression of the internal carotid artery (ICA). In the second, embolic large left middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction as a result of a thrombus from a pseudoaneurysmal dilatation of the left ICA. (Source: Journal of Radiology Case Reports)

Paravertebral calcification as a potential indicator for nonaccidental trauma
We report a case of nonaccidental trauma (NAT) involving a 23-month-old boy who presented with seizures, acute subarachnoid hemorrhage, and acute subdural hemorrhage. Ophthalmologic examination showed bilateral intraretinal hemorrhages. Further evaluation revealed that he had bilateral thoracolumbar paravertebral calcifications. The Children ' s Protective Services agency was involved in the case. The child was discharged to an inpatient rehabilitation facility. Vertebral fracture associated with paravertebral calcification has been reported as a sign of NAT. This case was unique because our patient had paravertebral calci...

Endovascular retrieval of Greenfield IVC filters 13 and 19 years post placement without major complication
Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters were first introduced in 1967 by Kazi Mobin-Uddin and later improved by Lazar Greenfield in the 1980s becoming a major component of catastrophic pulmonary embolism prevention. Nevertheless, filters are not entirely harmless. The long term risks include caval thrombosis, visceral penetration, and filters can serve as a nidus for infection. Filter retrieval is often complicated by intimal hyperplasia especially with increased indwelling time. Historically, Greenfield filters in place for longer than 3 weeks were considered permanent due to the risks of retrieval. Herein we present 2 cases of ...

Calcification of the epiglottis presenting as foreign body sensation in the neck
The epiglottis plays an important role in preventing food of different consistencies from entering the airway during swallowing. Calcification of epiglottis can, potentially, alter and limit its movement causing aspiration amongst other swallowing problems. Isolated calcification of the epiglottis and its clinical presentation remains a poorly understood entity for radiologists as well as clinicians. Therefore, it is important to recognize the imaging features of epiglottic calcification, and it ' s known clinical presentations to help clinicians with early diagnosis and management. Oncocytoma: A Differential Consideration for an Incidentally Detected FDG-Avid Renal Mass on PET/CT
We present a case of a 65 year-old female with a history of thyroid cancer who had an incidentally discovered hypermetabolic renal mass on surveillance PET-CT imaging. Due to the concern for a primary renal malignancy or metastatic disease, the mass was resected and proven to be an oncocytoma on pathologic review. (Source: Journal of Radiology Case Reports)
