Mini ‐implants and narrow diameter implants as mandibular overdenture retainers: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of clinical and radiographic outcomes
This study reviews the clinical and radiographic outcomes of Mini‐implants (MI) and Narrow Diameter Implants (NDI) as mandibular overdenture (MO) retainers. Six databases were consulted for clinical studies that evaluated implants with diameter ≤ 3.5 mm. Data on the MI and NDI for survival and success rate and peri‐implant bone loss and were collected and submitted to meta‐analysis. Thirty‐six studies were included, 24 reporting MI performance and 12 describing NDI results. The MI group comprised data from 1 cross‐sectional clinical study, 3 retrospective longitudinal (RL) clinical studies, 13 prospective longi...

A multi ‐centre randomized clinical trial of oral hygiene interventions following stroke – a 6‐months trial
ConclusionBoth, ‘Conventional’ and ‘Intense’ oral health promotion programmes may successfully reduce dental plaque during stroke rehabilitation and are of comparable effectiveness. Baseline dental plaque levels and functional dependency level were key factors associated with dental plaque levels at follow‐up at 6‐months.This article is protected by copyright. Analysis of masticatory muscle coordination during unilateral single ‐tooth clenching using muscle functional MRI
ConclusionThe results of this study suggest that the ipsilateral SHLP may contribute to the pulling of the mandibular condyle forward against the occlusal force generated by the ipsilateral temporal muscle. This article is protected by copyright. Multisensory modulation of experimentally evoked perceptual distortion of the face
ConclusionThe findings indicate the importance of multisensory integration for PD, and represent a significant step forward in the understanding of the factors that may influence this common condition. Future studies are encouraged to investigate further the cortical processing for possible implications for PD in pain management. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. Jaw sensorimotor control in healthy adults and effects of ageing
Summary The oro‐facial sensorimotor system is a unique system significantly distinguished from the spinal sensorimotor system. The jaw muscles are involved in mastication, swallowing and articulatory speech movements and their integration with respiration. These sensorimotor functions are vital for sustaining life and necessitate complex neuromuscular processing to provide for exquisite sensorimotor control of numerous oro‐facial muscles. The function of the jaw muscles in relation to sensorimotor control of these movements may be subject to ageing‐related declines. This review will focus on peripheral, brainstem and...

A systematic review and meta ‐analysis of 3‐unit fixed dental prostheses: Are the results of 2 abutment implants comparable to the results of 2 abutment teeth?
Summary The purpose of the systematic review and meta‐analysis was to compare the performance of 3‐unit bridges on teeth with 3‐unit bridges on implants, evaluating survival of the bridges, survival of the teeth or implants, condition of the hard and soft tissues surrounding the supports, complications and patient‐reported outcome measures (PROM) after a mean observation period of at least 1 year. A literature search was conducted using a combination of the search terms: fixed partial denture and fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). An electronic search for data published until January 2017 was undertaken using the MED...

Correlation between direction and severity of temporomandibular joint disc displacement and reduction ability during mouth opening
ConclusionsReduction ability during mouth opening is associated with the severity of disc displacement in IP, in both sagittal and coronal plane. Multi‐section analysis of all MR images allows distinguishing the correct disc position from disc displacement and can improve the ability to distinguish between various stages of TMJ internal derangement. This article is protected by copyright. Psychometric evaluation of a motor control test battery of the craniofacial region
ConclusionsThe results of the present study support the psychometric properties of test battery to measure motor control of the craniofacial region when evaluated through videotaping. This test battery could be used to differentiate between healthy subjects and subjects with musculoskeletal impairments in the cervical and orofacial regions. In addition, this test battery could be used to assess the effectiveness of management strategies in the craniofacial region. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
