Bone augmentation followed by implant surgery in the edentulous mandible: a systematic review
ConclusionThe survival rate of dental implants is high, regardless of the bone augmentation procedure used. High quality clinical trials are needed to support the current evidence and guidelines on pre‐implant bone grafting. Reporting of future research should include proper baseline characteristics and treatment description, as well as uniform outcome rendering. This article is protected by copyright. Prominence of scientific publications toward peri ‐implant complications in implantology: A bibliometric analysis using the H‐classics method
ConclusionThis is the first study to evaluate research trends in implantology in the past 40 years by using the H‐classics method, which through analyzing via principle bibliometric characteristics reflected a historical perspective on evolutionary mainstream in the field. Prominence of research regarding complications may forecast innovative advancements in the future. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. (Source: Journal of Oral Rehabilitation)

Validation of the Pain Resilience Scale in Chinese ‐speaking patients with temporomandibular disorders pain
Summary To validate the Pain Resilience Scale (PRS) for use in Chinese patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) pain. According to international guidelines, the original PRS was first translated and cross‐culturally adapted to formulate the Chinese version of PRS (PRS‐C). A total of 152 patients with TMD pain were recruited to complete series of questionnaires. Reliability of the PRS‐C was investigated using internal consistency and test‐retest reliability. Validity of the PRS‐C was calculated using cross‐cultural validity and convergent validity. Cross‐cultural validity was evaluated by examining the ...

Comparison of the outcomes of dynamic/static tests and palpation tests in TMD ‐pain patients
Conclusions: Some features of the dynamic/static tests make them potentially more useful than palpation tests for selected clinical purposes, such as discriminating between joint and muscle pain as well as monitoring symptoms course. Thus, findings from this investigation suggest that both tests should be included in the TMD diagnostic algorithms. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. Oro ‐facial pain and temporomandibular disorders classification systems: A critical appraisal and future directions
Summary It is a difficult undertaking to design a classification system for any disease entity, let alone for oro‐facial pain (OFP) and more specifically for temporomandibular disorders (TMD). A further complication of this task is that both physical and psychosocial variables must be included. To augment this process, a two‐step systematic review, adhering to PRISMA guidelines, of the classification systems published during the last 20 years for OFP and TMD was performed. The first search step identified 190 potential citations which ultimately resulted in only 17 articles being included for in‐depth analysis and r...

Digitised evaluation of speech intelligibility using vowels in maxillectomy patients
This study sought to determine the utility of digital acoustic analysis of vowels for the prediction of SI in maxillectomy patients, based on a comprehensive understanding of speech production in the vocal tract of maxillectomy patients and its perception. Speech samples were collected from 33 male maxillectomy patients (mean age 57.4 years) in two conditions, without and with a maxillofacial prosthesis, and formant data for the vowels /a/,/e/,/i/,/o/, and /u/ were calculated based on linear predictive coding. The frequency range of formant 2 (F2) was determined by differences between the minimum and maximum frequency. An...

Risk of inferior alveolar nerve injury with coronectomy vs surgical extraction of mandibular third molars —A comparison of two techniques and review of the literature
Summary The removal of mandibular third molar teeth is one of the most common oral surgical procedures. In a significant number of patients, it carries a degree of associated morbidity, including damage to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN). For this reason, practitioners desire the most up‐to‐date guidance on the most appropriate technique, informed by the best available evidence that will produce the lowest incidence of iatrogenic complications. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review comparing the effect of coronectomy vs complete surgical extraction of mandibular third molar teeth on the risk of IAN...

Should short ‐term use of alcohol‐containing mouthrinse be avoided for fear of worsening xerostomia?
This study aimed to assess the short‐term effect of alcohol‐containing mouthrinse versus mouthrinse without alcohol on xerostomia scores reported by Xerostomia Inventory (XI) scores and short version of the Xerostomia Inventory (SXI). This study was a two‐group parallel‐arm randomised controlled trial where participants were randomly allocated to twice a day for 7 days use of either alcohol‐containing or alcohol‐free mouthrinse. Allocation was concealed. The participants, the outcome assessors and the statistician were blinded to the allocation status. A total of 163 participants completed the pre‐and post...
