Breastfeeding Duration after Childhood Sexual Abuse: An Australian Cohort Study
Conclusion: Women who experienced CSA were successfully able to maintain breastfeeding at a level similar to those who had not experienced CSA after controlling for sociodemographic factors. Further testing of whether the effects of CSA are mediated through social variables is warranted to investigate whether addressing social factors in service provision may be key to improving breastfeeding duration. Calibration Adjustment of the Mid-infrared Analyzer for an Accurate Determination of the Macronutrient Composition of Human Milk
Conclusion: New calibration curves were developed for the Miris HMA, allowing accurate measurements in large ranges of macronutrient content. This is necessary for reliable use of this device in individualizing nutrition for preterm newborns. (Source: Journal of Human Lactation)

Assessing Infant Feeding Attitudes of Expectant Women in a Provincial Population in Canada: Validation of the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale
Conclusion: The IIFAS examined in this provincial population provides a valid and reliable assessment of maternal attitudes toward infant feeding. This tool could be used to identify mothers less likely to breastfeed and to inform health promotion programs. (Source: Journal of Human Lactation)

The Pharmacokinetics of Pregabalin in Breast Milk, Plasma, and Urine of Healthy Postpartum Women
Conclusion: Lactation appears to have had little influence on pregabalin pharmacokinetics. Overall, the estimated dose of pregabalin in breastfed children of women receiving pregabalin is low. Pregabalin was well tolerated in lactating women. Revision of Breastfeeding Guidelines in the Setting of Maternal Opioid Use Disorder: One Institutions Experience
Breastfeeding is recommended for women with opioid use disorder who are treated with methadone or buprenorphine. Infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) secondary to in-utero opioid exposure have unique challenges related to breastfeeding but also have significant benefits including improved NAS symptoms with a decreased need for pharmacotherapy. Poor understanding of substance use disorder and treatment, lack of evidence-based recommendations, and vague guidelines from national academies create controversy about breastfeeding eligibility for these women. Defining breastfeeding guidelines is often difficult, partic...

Domperidone for Treatment of Low Milk Supply in Breast Pump-Dependent Mothers of Hospitalized Premature Infants: A Clinical Protocol
Mothers of hospitalized premature infants who choose to provide breast milk are at increased risk of an inadequate breast milk supply. When nonpharmacologic interventions to increase milk supply fail, clinicians are faced with limited options. There is no current evidence to support the use of herbal galactogogues in this population and a black box warning for metoclopramide for potential serious side effects. Thus, domperidone was the only known, effective option for treatment of low milk supply in this population. With a thorough review of the literature on domperidone and coordination with the obstetrical, neonatal, lac...

Bringing Baby-Friendly to the Indian Health Service: A Systemwide Approach to Implementation
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) increases exclusive breastfeeding. Breastfeeding protects against obesity and diabetes, conditions to which American Indians and Alaska Natives are particularly prone. As part of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! in Indian Country initiative, the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Indian Health Service (IHS) began implementing the BFHI in 2011. The IHS administers 13 US birthing hospitals. There are 5 tribally administered hospitals in the lower 48 states that receive IHS funding, and the IHS encouraged them to seek Baby-Friendly designation also. In the 13...
