Consequences of a Lack of Standardization of Continuing Education Terminology: The Case of Practice Facilitation and Educational Outreach
Systematic reviews published in the quality improvement and continuing education literature have noted that the lack of standardized terminology for categorizing and describing various interventions in published studies is a major obstacle to drawing conclusions about their effectiveness. A case in point is practice facilitation and educational outreach. Although they are 2 long‐standing interventions with some common characteristics, researchers studying 1 intervention may be unfamiliar with the other given the relatively separate literatures that have developed around both sets of terms. A comparison of articles includ...

Using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Improve How We Understand, Teach, and Assess Clinical Reasoning
Clinical reasoning is essential to the practice of medicine. There have been many advances in the understanding of clinical reasoning and its assessment, yet current approaches have a number of important limitations. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is promising because it permits investigators to directly view the neuroanatomical changes that occur with thinking. In this article, we briefly review current approaches to assessing clinical reasoning, discuss the emerging role and utility of fMRI in understanding clinical reasoning, and suggest directions for future research, continuing education, and practice. On a Wing and a Prayer: An Assessment of Modularized Crew Resource Management Training for Health Care Professionals
DiscussionCRM training when delivered in a modular format has positive outcomes. Following the training, some respondents overcame workplace barriers to attempt to change negative workplace behavior. This progress provides cautious optimism for the potential for modular CRM training to benefit groups of interprofessional health staff. Improving Quality of Care for Diabetes Through a Maintenance of Certification Activity: Family Physicians’ Use of the Chronic Care Model
DiscussionThrough MC‐FP, family physicians improved the quality of care they delivered to diabetic patients. Improvement of care across nearly all measures, despite no consistent associations between processes of care or physician characteristics with improvement, suggests that participation in QI itself may lead to higher quality health care and this may be achieved through MC‐FP. Impact of Performance Improvement Continuing Medical Education on Cardiometabolic Risk Factor Control: The COSEHC Initiative
DiscussionThese data demonstrate that our PI CME activity is a useful strategy in assisting physicians to improve their management of cardiometabolic control rates in female patients with abnormal cholesterol control. Other studies that extend across longer PI CME PDSA periods may be needed to demonstrate statistical improvements in overall cardiometabolic treatment goals in men, women, and various subpopulations.
