Three-dimensional virtual reconstruction as a tool for preoperative planning in the management of complex anorectal fistulas
The objective of this work is to describe the development and initial experience of the construction of a virtual three-dimensional model of the pelvic anatomy of a patient, allowing the exact identification of the relationships between the fistulous tracts of complex anorectal fistulas and the other pelvic structures. An MRI was performed on this patient, and the images were exported to the Vitrea fX Workstation® software. A radiologist did the analysis and segmentation of the images that were then sent to a three-dimensional image processor (Meshlab v. 1.3.3 – ISTI – CNR Research Center, Pisa University, Italy). The...

Recurrence pattern of rectal cancer after surgical treatment. Analysis of 122 patients in a tertiary care center
This study aims to establish a recurrence pattern for rectal adenocarcinoma submitted to surgical treatment between March 2003 and July 2016. After exclusion criteria were applied, one hundred twenty two patients were analyzed. Global recurrence was found in 22% of them, while 13.1% have had local recurrence. Disease-free survival was 23.9 months, in average, and medium follow-up was 34.13 months, varying from 6 to 115 months. Recurrence, in literature, is usually between 3 and 35% in 5 years, and shows a 5-years survival rate of only 5%. Around 50% of cases, recurrence is local, confined to pelvis. This data followed lite...

The role of Phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase (PI3K) and Cycloxygenase-2 (COX2) in carcinogenesis of colorectal polyps
ConclusionsThe greater expression of the proliferation marker and Phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase in the right colon may be related to right-sided colorectal carcinogenesis. The proliferation marker, Cycloxygenase-2 and Phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase results can be associated with progression of polyps to colorectal cancer. The higher Phosphatase and tensin homolog expression suggests its attempt to control the cell cycle.ResumoObjetivosDeterminar a expressão imuno-histoquímica de Fosfatase homóloga a tensina (PTEN), Fosfatidilinositol-3-cinase (PI3K), Ciclooxigenase-2 (COX2) e um marcador de proliferação (Ki67) em póli...
