Pre-sleep arousal can be associated with efficient processing of sleep-related information
ConclusionsAlthough the current results cannot be explained by the extant cognitive theories of insomnia, we offer an alternative explanation based on the idea of worry as mental habit: mental processes that occur frequently (e.g., repetitive thoughts about sleep) require less cognitive resource. Therefore, sleep-related information may be processed easily without consuming much cognitive effort. (Source: Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry)

Testing a novelty-based extinction procedure for the reduction of conditioned avoidance
ConclusionsOur results do not support the hypothesis that novelty-based extinction reduces avoidance responses. This study can serve as a first exploration of novelty-based extinction for reducing avoidance and explicit measures of fear. (Source: Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry)

The effect of arousal and eye gaze direction on trust evaluations of stranger's faces: A potential pathway to paranoid thinking
ConclusionsThere is a complex interplay between arousal, evaluations of trustworthiness and gaze direction. Heightened arousal influences judgements of trustworthiness, but within the context of face type and gaze direction. (Source: Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry)

The impact of depressed mood, working memory capacity, and priming on delay discounting
ConclusionsThis study provides support for the effectiveness of a brief WM prime in enhancing ability to delay rewards. Priming may be a useful adjunctive intervention for individuals with WM dysfunction or conditions in which impulsive decision-making may derail long-term goals. Attentional control deficits in social anxiety: Investigating inhibition and shifting functions using a mixed antisaccade paradigm
ConclusionsThis study suggests that SA individuals demonstrate diminished efficiency of inhibition function but show no significant impairment of shifting function. However, in the mixed-task condition, SA individuals may exhibit an overall reduction in processing efficiency due to the higher task difficulty. The continuous vs discontinuous use of restorative safety behaviors on symptoms of contamination fear: An experimental investigation
ConclusionsAlthough findings were contrary to hypotheses, these data provide added support for the benign role of RSB as compared to conventional exposure. Furthermore, the removal of RSB may lead to more favorable process outcomes during exposure. The theoretical and clinical implications of these findings are discussed, and future directions are provided. (Source: Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry)

Is the association of deliberate self-harm with emotional relief stable or dependent on emotional context?
ConclusionsFindings suggest that the repeated use of DSH to bring about emotional relief may engender associations of DSH with relief that are relatively insensitive to emotional context. (Source: Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry)

Social and monetary incentives counteract fear-driven avoidance: Evidence from approach-avoidance decisions
ConclusionsThe present findings highlight that incentives are useful to initiate initial approach towards a feared stimulus. Although incentive-based approach may neither fully eliminate avoidance nor negative feelings towards the feared stimulus, such operant interventions may set the stage for more extensive extinction training. Imagining trauma: Memory amplification and the role of elaborative cognitions
ConclusionsOur findings suggest that effortful imagination of new trauma-related details leads to a reduction in intrusions and an increased tendency to not endorse trauma exposure over time. One explanation for this finding is that elaboration enhanced conceptual processing of the trauma analogue, therefore reducing intrusions. Critically, this reduction in intrusions affected participants' tendency to endorse trauma exposure, which is consistent with the reality-monitoring explanation for memory amplification. Anxiety moderates the effects of stressor controllability and cognitive reappraisal on distress following aversive exposure: An experimental investigation
ConclusionsThese findings indicate that the utility of CR may depend upon contextual factors such as stressor controllability, and individual differences in psychological symptoms. (Source: Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry)

Improving the psychometric properties of dot-probe attention measures using response-based computation
ConclusionsResponse-based attention measures demonstrate superior psychometric properties compared to standard attention measures, which may improve the detection of anxiety-related associations and treatment-related changes in clinical samples. Influence of sad mood induction on implicit self-esteem and its relationship with symptoms of depression and anxiety
ConclusionsWhile ISE was robust against increases in sad mood, there was some tentative support that symptoms of anxiety were related to larger decreases in ISE following a SMI. (Source: Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry)

High obsessive-compulsive individuals may have attenuated access to internal cues associated with active movement: Evidence from a head repositioning study
ConclusionsThis study implies that high OC individuals have a deficient access to internal cues involved in active movement. This might contribute to their doubt regarding their actions and to their reduced SoA. (Source: Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry)

The effects of one night of partial sleep deprivation on executive functions in individuals reporting chronic insomnia and good sleepers
ConclusionsWe found that SC was smaller in the good sleepers after a night of partial sleep deprivation compared to a habitual night, indicating a better switching performance. The insomnia group showed no differences in performance after the two experimental nights. Several factors may account for these results, including increased levels of arousal and cognitive effort during task execution. (Source: Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry)
