Between hope and fear: A qualitative study on perioperative experiences and coping of patients after lumbar fusion surgery
ConclusionThis study demonstrates that for lumbar fusion patients, surgery seems to be a last resort. Professionals should fulfill the patients need for information and focus on managing realistic expectations while respecting the distress and strain the illness process has on a patient, thereby potentially increasing patient satisfaction and enhancing postoperative recovery. Improving the referral pattern of patients with knee osteoarthritis to the orthopaedic surgeon: Development and evaluation of a new screening algorithm based on patient-reported data and radiographs
ConclusionsThe algorithm was able to identify most patients relevant for referral to OS, but less suitable for identifying those not relevant. The algorithm performed excellent in predicting TKR surgery. With further development, this screening algorithm might contribute to improvement of the referral pattern in the orthopaedic outpatient clinic. Cognitive status following a hip fracture and its association with postoperative mortality and activities of daily living A prospective comparative study of two prehospital emergency care procedures
ConclusionPFTC did not influence hip fracture patients’ cognitive function. Patients with prehospital cognitive impairment had a poor outcome in terms of mortality and ADL, indicating the need for special care interventions. (Source: International Journal of Orthopaedic and Trauma Nursing)

Orthopaedic nurses’ engagement in clinical research; an exploration of ideas, facilitators and challenges
ConclusionOur findings suggest that significant work is still required to build sufficient research capacity and capability within the nursing workforce. Key to success will be developing effective leaders, who can create a positive and supportive research culture across an organisation to strengthen the research voice of nursing, which will drive improvements in future care. ‘Does an orthopaedic workshop improve the confidence of nurses transitioning into the specialty of orthopaedics?’
ConclusionIt was evident that nurses transitioning into the speciality of orthopaedics had lower confidence levels in relation to specialty specific skills and knowledge. The use of an education workshop improved the confidence of nurses not only immediately post intervention but also in the longer term. A recommendation of supporting a pathway to transition in the specialty which includes specific education delivered at key times is seen as beneficial to the advanced beginner nurses, the specialty, patients and the profession. Examining pain before and after primary total knee replacement (TKR): A retrospective chart review
ConclusionPain after TKR can be a limiting factor in rehabilitation activities. This retrospective chart review examined the pain intensity scores before and after primary TKR for patients in our facility. We found a significant difference in the pain intensity from before surgery to after surgery. However, further research needs to be conducted to examine the intensity and quality of pain as well as which analgesics patients are consuming after discharge from hospital at 6 weeks and 3 months. Enhanced recovery in usual health care improves functional recovery after total knee arthroplasty
ConclusionImplementation of the new clinical care pathway accelerated functional recovery and reduced LOS for patients undergoing TKA. Future research should focus on having multiple discharge moments per day, which might encourage patients to achieve functional recovery as soon as possible.
