Publication date: Available online 27 April 2015 Source:International Journal of Epilepsy Author(s): Dinkar Kulshreshtha , Pradeep Kumar Maurya , Ajai Kumar Singh , Anup Kumar Thacker Anti-epileptic drugs are the mainstay in treatment of epilepsy. It requires a strong clinical decision in patients who are well controlled on medications to withdraw anti-epileptic drugs. This decision has to be based on the clinical profile, epilepsy type, neuroimaging and electroencephalography (EEG) findings and has to be more individualized as per the patient needs. In the context of drug withdrawal, it is necessary to look into t...

A case of paroxysmal nocturnal dystonia responsive to cyproheptadine: Is it almost always epileptic?
We present a young adult patient with refractory NPD who responded to antihistamine cyproheptadine and propose an alternative theory to describe NPD according to the basal ganglia dysregulation. So, in such patients, other therapeutic approach should be reasonably sought. (Source: International Journal of Epilepsy)

Assessment of quality of life in Indian adults with epilepsy and their caregivers
Conclusion This study reaffirms the findings of the previous studies that key to improving quality of life of people with epilepsy, are good control of seizure and reducing side effects (by minimizing antiepileptic drugs) along with holistic care. Caregivers QOL is also proportionally affected by subjects QOL and it is seen to have adverse outcomes when the caregiver is female (mother or wife), elderly, of low socioeconomic status and when subject has poor seizure control. Status epilepticus in adults: A study from Nigeria
Conclusion Our study showed that the most common underlying etiologies in SE were stroke, antiepileptic drug non-compliance CNS infections and metabolic derangement. Knowledge, attitude and practice of parents regarding pediatric antiepileptic drug therapy
Conclusion In this cohort, even though the parents had a fair knowledge about the nature of epilepsy, they were found to be less aware about its characteristics, causes and prognosis. The awareness about the nature and duration of treatment, its objectives, use of drugs, their side effects and importance of adherence to drug regimen was found to be significantly low with a potential for affecting the therapeutic outcome. Special awareness programs for parents of children with epilepsy may be needed to reduce the knowledge gaps in the management of epilepsy and to ensure compliance and optimal therapeutic outcomes. Possible levetiracetam induced encephalopathy presenting as electrical status epilepticus: An unknown occurrence
We report a patient who was on levetiracetam for acute symptomatic seizures and developed encephalopathy with electroencephalogram showing generalised triphasic waves. These triphasic waves disappeared with intravenous lorazepam but without clinical improvement in sensorium. The electroencephalographic abnormality appeared as electrical status epilepticus which got normalised on discontinuation of levetiracetam. This is the first report of levetiracetam induced encephalopathy presenting as electrical status epilepticus and also depicts electroencephalographic correlate of levetiracetam induced encephalopathy. Epilepsy in inborn errors of metabolism: two cases with unusual presentation
We describe a case of Glutaric aciduria type 1 presenting with West syndrome and a case of intermittent Maple syrup urine disease presenting with epileptic encephalopathy.
