New cooperative medical financing policy and hospitalization in rural China: multi-stage cross-sectional surveys
Conclusions NCMS improved the utilization of in-hospital services step by step as time went on, and greatly alleviated cost-related barriers to accessing health services. Even so, because costs continue to restrict access to services we should continue the NCMS policy and improve its guarantee levels. (Source: International Health)

Predicting the burden of acute myocardial infarction in a country with limited resources: combining data from routine sources
Conclusions Despite no electronic medical record system in Barbados, data were simple to collect, and provided a rough baseline for acute MI burden. We show that, in countries with small populations, limited resources and in absence of surveillance, national mortality statistics and routine hospital data can be combined to adequately model national estimates of acute MI incidence. This cheap and simple, yet fairly accurate method could be a key tool for other low-resource countries with ageing populations and increasing cardiovascular disease levels. Prevalence of violence in childhood and adolescence and the impact on educational outcomes: evidence from the 2013 Peruvian national survey on social relations
Conclusions The relationship between violence in childhood and poorer educational outcomes is multi-faceted, potentially bi-directional, and manifests differently between genders. This research highlights the need for targeted research, policy and programming responses for prevention of violence. (Source: International Health)

Exposure to violence predicts poor educational outcomes in young children in South Africa and Malawi
Conclusion Violence experiences were associated with a number of educational outcomes, which may have long-term consequences. Community-based organisations may be well placed to address such violence, with a particular emphasis on the challenges faced by children who are HIV positive. (Source: International Health)

Ischemic heart disease among the general Mongolian population: a review of epidemiological studies
Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is considered to be a pivotal health problem in Mongolia. To summarize the existing epidemiology of IHD in the general Mongolian population is crucial for primary prevention. The present review summarized population-based epidemiological data of IHD in Mongolia. When epidemiological studies were extracted from databases, very limited studies were available. The frequencies of IHD and IHD-attributable death rates appeared to be high and have an increased tendency in Mongolia. This could to be due to a gradually worsening state of potential IHD-related risk factors, such as smoking, hypertension,...

Behavioural and emotional responses to the 2014 Ebola outbreak in Nigeria: a narrative review
This paper reviews the behavioural and emotional responses to the 2014 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in Nigeria as documented in scientific publications and portrayed in the media between 21 July 2014 and 30 March 2015. The outbreak generated national interest and there were reports of patients suspected of having Ebola being avoided for fear of contracting the disease, misconceptions about EVD prevention and protests against locations of EVD-treatment centres. Suspected and confirmed EVD patients, as well as healthcare workers (HCW) who treated them, faced stigma and discrimination. The federal and state governments,...

Innovative financing for late-stage global health research and development: the Global Health Investment Fund
Innovative financing strategies for global health are urgently needed to reinvigorate investment and new tools for impact. Bottleneck areas along the research and development (R&D) pipeline require particular attention, such as the transitions from preclinical discovery to clinical study, and product development to implementation and delivery. Successful organizations mobilizing and disbursing resources through innovating financing mechanisms include UNITAID, the Global Fund, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Although precise numbers are poorly documented, estimated investment in low-income settings falls seriously short...
