Imaging and endovascular management in allograft renal artery stenosis: Case report
Publication date: April–June 2014 Source:Indian Journal of Transplantation, Volume 8, Issue 2 Author(s): Hiralal , Manas Ranjan Jena , Puja Keshwani , Abhishek Jha , Anuj Thakral , R.V. Phadke , Narayan Prasad , Anupama Kaul , R.K. Sharma Transplant renal artery stenosis (TRAS) is a relatively frequent, potentially curable cause of refractory hypertension and allograft dysfunction and usually becomes apparent between 2 months and 2 years after renal transplantation. Depending on the hemodynamic significance of stenosis it can be treated conservatively or by revascularization. Here we describe a case of TRAS w...

Fatal strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome in a renal allograft recipient: A case report and review of literature
We report a case of severe fatal strongyloides stercoralis in renal transplant recipients and review of literature in this regard. (Source: Indian Journal of Transplantation)

Spontaneous rupture of splenic abscess in post renal transplant
We report a rare case of spontaneous rupture of splenic abscess in a patient who was on immuno-suppressants following renal transplant. She was incidentally found to have this rupture when an ultrasound abdomen was done to rule out hypersplenism. Diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion and early intervention produces good outcomes. (Source: Indian Journal of Transplantation)

Successful thrombolysis of renal allograft venous thrombosis – A case report
Publication date: April–June 2014 Source:Indian Journal of Transplantation, Volume 8, Issue 2 Author(s): Sampath Kumar Krishnaswamy , Mukuntha Rajan , Arunachalam Prabahar Renal allograft venous thrombosis is a rare but catastrophic complication resulting in graft failure. A 55-year-old male underwent live related renal transplantation. Donor's right kidney was placed in recipient's left iliac fossa. Graft renal artery was anastomosed to the left internal iliac artery. Graft renal vein was anastomosed to the left external iliac vein in a side to side fashion. He was discharged with a serum creatinine of 0.9 mg. F...

An unusual case of post-renal transplant anemia induced by Parvovirus B19
We report a 43-year-old man, a known case of Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, who underwent a pre-emptive renal transplant with antithymocyte globulin (ATG) induction (3 mg/kg) and triple immunosuppression. Six months after transplant, he developed severe anemia requiring blood transfusions. Bone marrow aspirate revealed maturation arrest of the erythroid series at the stage of proerythroblasts and basophilic erythroblasts, and presence of giant proerythroblasts with viral inclusions. IgM antibodies against Parvovirus B19 (PVB19) were positive. We concluded that this was a case of PVB19 induced anemia. It is ...

External iliac artery dissection after renal transplant
We report a case of right external iliac artery dissection in a diabetic and hypertensive patient immediately after transplant resulting in cessation of blood supply to the graft and lower limb. The dissected segment was resected and replaced by a synthetic graft there by restoring the blood supply to the lower limb. The renal graft was removed, re-perfused with cold saline and anastomosed to the internal iliac artery and the arterial blood flow was immediately restored. The postoperative course was uneventful and soon after transplantation the graft functioned well. The patient completed 6-month follow-up with a serum cre...

Outcomes of living donor renal transplant recipients with and without basiliximab induction: A long-term follow-up study
Conclusion Acute rejection was significantly less in patients with induction compared to that of patients without induction. The cumulative short and long term patients and graft survival was significantly better in patients with induction compared to that of patients without induction. The use of CT angiography in the evaluation of living donors for kidney transplantation
Conclusion In the majority of cases, there was good correlation between preoperative CT renal angiography and operative findings. CT angiography is one of the most important exams in the preoperative evaluation of renal donor candidates. (Source: Indian Journal of Transplantation)

Successful retransplantation after graft loss due to BK virus nephropathy
We report a case of successful retransplantation in a young male with previous graft loss due to BKVN which to the best of our knowledge is the first reported case in the Indian literature. (Source: Indian Journal of Transplantation)

Disseminated nocardiosis: A rare presentation with surgical emergency
Conclusion The clinician should maintain a high index of suspicion for Nocardia infection when dealing with immunocompromised patients with atypical presentation especially with neurological involvement. The diagnosis of Nocardia infection is made via culture and specimen smear morphology. Balanced surgical and medical line of treatment is to be individualized for each patient according to the dissemination, phenotype and host status. (Source: Indian Journal of Transplantation)

Effect of renal transplantation on multiple hormone levels in patients of chronic kidney disease: A single center study
Conclusion RTx corrects most of the hormonal disturbances in CKD patients, particularly abnormalities in PTH and LH levels in early post transplant period. Even mild allograft dysfunction significantly affects the hormonal levels in a manner which is similar to the changes seen in CKD. (Source: Indian Journal of Transplantation)

Challenges faced by bone marrow registries in India
Conclusion As cost is a major challenge, we need to strive to increase donor pool and also take major steps to decrease the donor dropout rates by increasingly motivating potential donors and trying to help them overcome any myth or fear from donating stem cells. Vascular complications post renal transplant – Case report
Conclusion 3 out of 50 renal transplants at our institute over 15 months follow-up had been reported as early vascular complications. One patient required re-exploration. Appropriate evaluation and management is the key to salvage the graft. Atherosclerosis (donor/recipient), acute rejection, delayed graft function increase this risk.
