Does age difference really matter? Facial markers of biologicalquality and age difference between husband and wife
This study aims to fill this gap. We had used facial photographs and demographic data of heterosexual marriages. Facial cues of biological quality, such as averageness, bilateral symmetry, and sexual dimorphism, were digitally measured using geometric morphometric methods and then associated with spouses’ age difference. It turned out that a greater age disparity between spouses correlates, in both partners, with higher scores in facial measures which indicate partners’ biological quality. One exception is female facial masculinity–generally regarded as an unattractive marker of a low biological quality–which, too,...

Os parietale partitum: Exploring the prevalence of this trait in four contemporary populations
Publication date: Available online 13 April 2016 Source:HOMO - Journal of Comparative Human Biology Author(s): P.S. Almeida Prado, J.G. Garcia-Donas, H. Langstaff, E. Cunha, P. Kyriakou, E.F. Kranioti Os parietale partitum is a variable segmentation of the parietal bone. This manifests as a parietal division in the anteroposterior or superoinferior planes that is separated by an unusual suture and can be complete or incomplete. The existence of parietal divisions was observed and documented more than 260 years ago. The main objectives of this paper are to record the incidence of this rare trait in four mod...

Phenotypic characteristics of adolescents with concave and convex facial profiles – The National Health Examination Survey
Publication date: Available online 18 April 2016 Source:HOMO - Journal of Comparative Human Biology Author(s): P.P. Hujoel, A.-M. Bollen, K.C.J. Yuen, I.A. Hujoel It has been suggested that facial traits are informative on the inherited susceptibility to tuberculosis and obesity, two current global health issues. Our aim was to compare the phenotypic characteristics of adolescents with dental markers for a concave (n =420), a convex (n =978), and a straight (n =3542) facial profile in a nationally representative sample of United States adolescents. The results show that adolescents with a concave facial profile...

A morphometric analysis of prognathism and evaluation of the gnathic index in modern humans
This study used geometric morphometrics to assess whether the gnathic index is a reliable indicator of subnasal prognathism and to explore the effects of sex, population, and allometry on this trait. Nineteen craniofacial landmarks were collected from three-dimensional cranial surface scans of 192 individuals across five population groups. Generalized Procrustes analysis and principal components analysis were employed to identify shape components related to changes in subnasal prognathism, comparing component scores to gnathic index values. M/ANOVAs were used to determine the effects of sex and population on prognathism, a...

Fatness of female field hockey players: Comparison of estimates with different methods
Publication date: Available online 6 May 2016 Source:HOMO - Journal of Comparative Human Biology Author(s): M. Krzykała, J.M. Konarski, R.M. Malina, K. Rachwalski, P. Leszczyński, E. Ziółkowska-Łajp The aim of the study was to compare relative body fat (% fat) in female field hockey players using several methods with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as the reference. Participants were 31 Polish hockey players 16–30 years of age, 17 national and 14 youth level. Percent body fat was estimated by DXA (reference method), conventional and segmental bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and predict...

Sex determination by three-dimensional geometric morphometrics of the vault and midsagittal curve of the neurocranium in a modern Greek population sample
Publication date: Available online 6 April 2016 Source:HOMO - Journal of Comparative Human Biology Author(s): Maria-Eleni Chovalopoulou, Efstratios D. Valakos, Sotiris K. Manolis The aim of this study is to assess sexual dimorphism of adult crania in the vault and midsagittal curve of the vault using three-dimensional geometric morphometric methods. The study sample consisted of 176 crania of known sex (94 males, 82 females) belonging to individuals who lived during the 20th century in Greece. The three-dimensional co-ordinates of 31 ecto-cranial landmarks and 30 semi-landmarks were digitized using a MicroScribe ...

Intra-population dental morphological variability among the Prehispanic Maya
Publication date: Available online 26 March 2016 Source:HOMO - Journal of Comparative Human Biology Author(s): A. Cucina The present paper proposes a new approach to the estimation of intra-site variability of dental morphological traits when they are dichotomized into presence vs absence. It rests on the assumption that 1) higher intra-site variability is the expression of intense population dynamics and gene flow; and 2) maximum variability is reached when each trait is expressed in the population with a frequency of 50%. The approach simulates the calculation of frequency of heterozygotes in Mendelian traits (2xiy...

All different, all equal: evidence of a heterogeneous Neolithic population at the Bom Santo Cave necropolis (Portugal)
The objective of this paper was to contribute to the discussion regarding the socio-political organization of south-western Iberian Middle Neolithic populations. To that end, the preservation and distribution of human remains and the dispersion of grave goods within two rooms of the Bom Santo Cave (Rooms A and B) were investigated and combined with genetic and isotopic data previously published. Grave goods distribution and skeletal analyses highlighted an important diversity in terms of funerary practices thus corroborating data from ancient DNA and Sr/O isotopic analyses that suggested a great genetic and geographic dive...

Publication date: Available online 10 March 2016 Source:HOMO - Journal of Comparative Human Biology Author(s): M. Sett, S. Sahu The purpose of the study is to evaluate the body composition and hand grip strength as indirect measures of nutritional status of 162 female workers and the status of the serum oxidative stress enzymes of 35 female workers engaged in the manual brick making units of the unorganized sectors of West Bengal, India. Results show that the waist-hip ratio values (mean 0.79 vs. 0.83; p =0.0034) are significantly greater amongst the brick carriers than the moulders. The body density (mean 1067.0 v...

Variation of mandibular sexual dimorphism across human facial patterns
In conclusion, sex-specific mandibular traits behave in a different way across vertical facial patterns. These results imply that an assessment of the vertical facial pattern of the individual is required before a sexual diagnosis of the mandible is proposed. The coracoclavicular joint. A systematic review and meta-analysis
Publication date: Available online 30 December 2015 Source:HOMO - Journal of Comparative Human Biology Author(s): K. Yammine, C. Assi The coracoclavicular joint (CCJ) is considered as a rare articulation in humans. Though rarely it could be symptomatic, its presence should be acknowledged by physicians. The aim of this systematic review is to conduct an evidence synthesis on the prevalence of this condition in different ethnic populations. Thirty nine studies including 51 sub-studies met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analytical results showed true prevalence values of ≃5%, ≃7% and 2.7% from skeletal, cadaver...
