Service quality and perceived value of technology-based service encounters: evaluation of clinical staff satisfaction in Taiwan.
This study examined service quality and perceived value of TBSEs used in health organisations from the perspective of clinical staff, with staff technology readiness as a moderator. A quantitative survey was conducted in Taiwan, across private and public healthcare organisations. Results showed that TBSEs had a direct effect on service quality and perceived value, which in turn had a direct effect on staff satisfaction in using TBSEs. However, service quality had no effect on perceived value when moderated by technology readiness. Theoretical and managerial implications of these findings are discussed. PMID: 236409...

Does the PCEHR mean a new paradigm for information security? Implications for health information management.
Authors: Williams PA Abstract Australia is stepping up to the new e-health environment. With this comes new legislation and new demands on information security. The expanded functionality of e-health and the increased legislative requirements, coupled with new uses of technology, means that enhancement of existing security practice will be necessary. This paperanalyses the new operating environment for Australian healthcare and the legislation governing it, and highlights the changes that are required to meet this new context. Individuals are now more responsible for security and organisations should be pr...

Can SNOMED CT as implemented in New South Wales, Australia be used for road trauma injury surveillance in emergency departments?
This study aimed to assess the consequences of its introduction, as implemented as part of the ED information system in NSW, for identifying road trauma-related injuries in EDs. It involved a retrospective analysis of road trauma-related injuries identified in linked police, ED and mortality records during March 2007 to December 2009. Of all SNOMED CT codes in the principal provisional diagnosis field, between 53.7% and 78.4% referred to the type of injury or symptom experienced by the individual. Of the road users identified by police, 3.2% of vehicle occupants, 6% of motorcyclists, 10.0% of pedal cyclists and 5.2% of ped...

Moving health promotion communities online: a review of the literature.
Authors: Sunderland N, Beekhuyzen J, Kendall E, Wolski M Abstract There is a need to enhance the effectiveness and reach of complex health promotion initiatives by providing opportunities for diverse health promotion practitioners and others to interact in online settings. This paper reviews the existing literature on how to take health promotion communities and networks into online settings. A scoping review of relevant bodies of literature and empirical evidence was undertaken to provide an interpretive synthesis of existing knowledge on the topic. Sixteen studies were identified between 1986 and 2007. R...

Discretionary use of family practice information systems: an empirical examination in Turkey.
This study examined the antecedents and consequences of the discretionary use of the family practice information systems (FPIS) by family physicians in Turkey. A structured survey was conducted among family physicians located in Kahramanmaras, a southern province in Turkey. The partial least squares (PLS) method was used to analyse the survey data. Findings showed that (1) physicians' discretionary use of FPIS is positively related to their perceived value of patient care; (2) physicians' computer self-efficacy is positively related to their discretionary use of FPIS; (3) physicians' innovativeness in information technolog...

Mining association rules between abnormal health examination results and outpatient medical records.
This study used the medical database of a regional hospital in Taiwan to illustrate how association rules can be found between abnormal health examination results and outpatient illnesses. The rules can help to build up a disease-prevention knowledge database that assists healthcare providers in follow-up treatment and prevention. Furthermore, this study proposes a new algorithm, the data cutting and sorting method, or DCSM, in place of the traditional Apriori algorithm. DCSM significantly improves the mining performance of Apriori by reducing the time to scan health examination and outpatient medical records, both of whic...

A comparison of state and national Australian data on external cause of injury due to falls.
Authors: Cunningham J, Williamson D, Robinson KM, Paul L Abstract Falls are the leading cause of hospital-treated injuries in Australia. Injury surveillance data are analysed to identify common causes and types of fall injuries, risk factors for particular activities, location of injury occurrence, and age groups at risk of injury. External cause of injury data include cause of injury, place of occurrence, and activity when injured. These are collected in hospitals, where ICD-10-AM codes are assigned by Health Information Managers and clinical coders, based on medical record documentation. The current stud...

Methodological processes in validating and analysing the quality of population-based data: a case study using the Victorian Perinatal Data Collection.
Authors: Davey MA, Sloan ML, Palma S, Riley M, King J Abstract This paper describes methods used and results obtained from a study that measured the accuracy of a routinely collected population-based data set. Data on a random sample of births were extracted from the 2003 Victorian Perinatal Data Collection (VPDC) and compared with information in the original medical record. Accuracy was calculated for 111 items related to diverse aspects of maternity and neonatal health and care. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value were calculated for dichotomous items. Sevent...

Assessing the reliability of causes of death reported by the Vital Registration System in Sri Lanka: medical records review in Colombo.
Authors: Rampatige R, Gamage S, Peiris S, Lopez AD Abstract Information on causes of death is critical for informed decision making in the health sector. This paper reports findings from a study that measured the accuracy of registered causes of death and quality of medical records for a sample of deaths occurring in hospitals in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Five physicians, trained in medical certification of cause of death, reconstructed death certificates for hospital deaths from medical records and assessed the quality of medical records for this purpose. The majority of medical records were found to be of aver...
