Casemix Funding Optimisation: Working Together to Make the Most of Every Episode.
Authors: Uzkuraitis C, Hastings K, Torney B Abstract Eastern Health, a large public Victorian Healthcare network, conducted a WIES optimisation audit across the casemix-funded sites for separations in the 2009/2010 financial year. The audit was conducted using existing staff resources and resulted in a significant increase in casemix funding at a minimal cost. The audit showcased the skill set of existing staff and resulted in enormous benefits to the coding and casemix team by demonstrating the value of the combination of skills that makes clinical coders unique. The development of an internal web-based a...

Coding in Ireland: Time for Recognition.
Authors: Murphy D Abstract Recognition of skilled coders' work within the Irish health system is long overdue. A project being undertaken in Ireland now by the central office for coding at the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) is exploring ways to raise the coders' profile, promote a profession of clinical coders and ensure quality benchmarks for all stakeholders, including the introduction of accredited training. The Hospital Inpatient Enquiry (HIPE) at the ESRI uses ICD-10-AM and trains and supports coders in all aspects of their work. This paper also presents some preliminary findings of a H...

Pofessional Practice and Innovation: Geographical Information Systems: An Effective Planning and Decision-Making Platform for Community Health Coalitions in Australia.
Authors: Baum S, Kendall E, Muenchberger H, Gudes O, Yigitcanlar T Abstract The development of locally-based healthcare initiatives, such as community health coalitions that focus on capacity building programs and multi-faceted responses to long-term health problems, have become an increasingly important part of the public health landscape. As a result of their complexity and the level of investment, it has become necessary to develop innovative ways to help manage these new healthcare approaches. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have been suggested as one of the innovative approaches that will allow...

Social Media in Health - What are the Safety Concerns for Health Consumers?
Authors: Lau AYS, Gabarron E, Fernandez-Luque L, Armayones M Abstract Recent literature has discussed the unintended consequences of clinical information technologies (IT) on patient safety, yet there has been little discussion about the safety concerns in the area of consumer health IT. This paper presents a range of safety concerns for consumers in social media, with a case study on YouTube. We conducted a scan of abstracts on 'quality criteria' related to YouTube. Five areas regarding the safety of YouTube for consumers were identified: (a) harmful health material targeted at consumers (such as inapprop...

Simulation Studies for the Evaluation of Health Information Technologies: Experiences and Results.
This article presents the results of a controlled simulation study with 50 simulation runs, including ten doctors and five simulation patients, and discusses experiences and lessons learnt while conducting the study. Although the new electronic medication management system showed tendencies to improve medication safety when compared with the standard system, this tendency was not significant. Altogether, five distinct situations were identified where the new medication management system did help to improve medication safety. This simulation study provided a good compromise between internal validity and external validity. H...

Information Support for Health Management in Regional Sri Lanka: Health Managers' Perspectives.
Authors: Ranasinghe KI, Chan T, Yaralagadda P Abstract Good management, supported by accurate, timely and reliable health information, is vital for increasing the effectiveness of Health Information Systems (HIS). When it comes to managing the under-resourced health systems of developing countries, information-based decision making is particularly important. This paper reports findings of a self-report survey that investigated perceptions of local health managers (HMs) of their own regional HIS in Sri Lanka. Data were collected through a validated, pre-tested postal questionnaire, and distributed among a s...

A content analysis of the consumer-facing online information about My Health Record: Implications for increasing knowledge and awareness to facilitate uptake and use.
CONCLUSION: The authors identified a number of gaps and areas for improvement in the provision of consumer-facing information about MyHR. Readability is too high for the general Australian population, and there are few translated resources, which means that the information provided does not cater to people with low literacy levels, communication disability, and/or difficulties in understanding written English. The target audiences for resources do not reflect priority groups that were identified during the MyHR development processes. There are also gaps in information provision about how consumers can use MyHR as a tool to...

Varying impact of co-morbid conditions on self-harm resulting in mortality in Australia.
CONCLUSION: While ICD-10 coded mortality data more comprehensively identified co-morbidities, discrepancies in the identification of suicide and co-morbid conditions in both systems require further investigation to determine their nature (linkage errors, human subjectivity) and address them. Furthermore, due to the prescriptive coding procedures, the extent to which medico-legal databases may be used to explore potential and previously unrecognised associations between chronic conditions and self-harm deaths remains limited.
