A CBCT evaluation of molar uprighting by conventional versus microimplant-assisted methods: an in-vivo study
Conclusions: The mean amount of change in the mesial angulation of the second molar in the CA as well as the MIA groups was similar. MIA, which used mini-implant as a source of anchorage, was more effective in preventing movement of the anchorage teeth as well as preventing extrusion of the second molar in the vertical plane, when compared to the CA group, which used dental units as a source of anchorage.RESUMO Objetivo: o objetivo deste estudo prospectivo foi comparar, usando imagens de TCFC, os efeitos tridimensionais da mola convencional de verticaliza ção (CA) e da mola de verticalização com ancoragem em mini-imp...

Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia: a contraindication to orthodontic treatment in compromised areas
ABSTRACT Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia is a sclerosing disease that affects the mandible, especially the alveolar process, and that is, in most cases, bilateral; however, in some cases it affects up to three or even four quadrants. During the disease, normal bone is replaced with a thinly formed, irregularly distributed tissue peppered with radiolucent areas of soft tissue. Newly formed bone does not seem to invade periodontal space, but, in several images, it is confused with the roots, without, however, compromising pulp vitality or tooth position in the dental arch. There is no replacement resorption, not even when t...

Twenty-year clinical experience with fixed functional appliances
Conclusions: Rigid fixed functional appliances provide better skeletal results than flexible and hybrid ones. Flexible and hybrid appliances have similar effects to those produced by Class II elastics. They ultimately correct Class II with dentoalveolar changes. From a biomechanical standpoint, fixed functional appliances are more recommended to treat Class II in dolichofacial patients, in comparison to Class II elastics.RESUMO Introdu ção: considerando-se o grande número de aparelhos propulsores mandibulares, não é uma tarefa fácil escolher o melhor deles para o seu paciente. Objetivo: descrever o desenvolvimento ...

Virtual orthodontic setup in orthodontic camouflage planning for skeletal Class III malocclusion
ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper was to emphasize the importance of the orthodontic setup in treatment planning for skeletal Class III malocclusion correction in an adult patient with moderate lower anterior crowding and anterior crossbite associated with two supernumerary lower incisors.RESUMO O objetivo desse artigo é enfatizar a importância do setup ortodôntico no planejamento do tratamento da má oclusão de Classe III esquelética de uma paciente adulta com apinhamento anteroinferior moderado e mordida cruzada anterior associada à presença de dois incisivos inferiores supranumerários. Evaluation of the prototype of a new bracket-positioning gauge
Conclusion: Clinical experience interfered with the accuracy of vertical positioning of orthodontic attachments. As for the groups of teeth, premolars, followed by canines and incisors had the closes t mean values to the standard measurement.RESUMO Objetivos: os objetivos deste estudo foram apresentar um prot ótipo de posicionador de braquetes ortodônticos que dificulte a inclinação no sentido vertical, possibilitando a redução dos erros de altura no posicionamento desses acessórios; além de testar sua precisão na colagem, realizada por grupos de indivíduos com diferentes tempos de experiência clínica em Ort...

Perception of facial profile attractiveness of a brown subject displaying different degrees of lip projection or retrusion, in the city of Salvador/Bahia
Conclusions: It is suggested that among the accessed population, straight and slightly convex or concave profiles were preferred for a brown subject and moderate or excessive facial protrusion were not well accepted. It is expected that these data can guide orthodontists about the need for extraction to reduce dental protrusion in brown patients.RESUMO Introdu ção: a atratividade e a estética facial são comumente definidas pela mídia, na sociedade moderna, e o número de pacientes buscando mudar seu aspecto facial tem aumentado progressivamente. Acredita-se que a convexidade facial aumentada seja considerada não es...

Additional intraoral radiographs may change the judgment regarding the final position of orthodontic mini-implants
Conclusion: Considering the limitations of the study, it is concluded that additional radiographic images may change the judgement about OMI final position without necessarily increasing the degree of certainty of such judgment.RESUMO Objetivo: avaliar se a adi ção de radiografias interproximais verticais (IV) e/ou oclusais (OC) pode alterar o julgamento inicial sobre a posição final dos mini-implantes ortodônticos (MI) baseado somente na radiografia periapical (PA). Métodos: foram realizadas análises subjetivas e objetivas. Imagens radiográficas de 26 regiões contendo MI foram divididas em quatro grupos: PA, P...

Impact of malocclusion on the quality of life of children aged 8 to 10 years
Conclusions: Extremely severe malocclusion and pronounced maxillary anterior overjet were associated with a negative impact on quality of life.RESUMO Objetivo: o objetivo do presente estudo transversal foi avaliar o impacto da m á oclusão na qualidade de vida de crianças na faixa etária de 8 a 10 anos de idade, estudantes de escolas da rede pública da cidade de Belo Horizonte, estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Métodos: o instrumento utilizado para medir a qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde bucal foi a versão bras ileira do Child Perceptions Questionnaire 8-10 (CPQ8-10). Correlation between craniofacial growth and upper and lower body heights in subjects with Class I occlusion
Conclusions: Based on the relatively strong correlation between upper body length and mandibular length, further research in this area may warrant its use as a predictor for mandibular growth modification timing.RESUMO Objetivo: correlacionar a idade esquel ética, a estatura, as alturas corporais superior e inferior, e algumas características específicas do crescimento craniofacial, em uma amostra de indivíduos em crescimento, e delinear o crescimento craniofacial usando regressão multivariada. Mandibular anterior crowding: normal or pathological?
ABSTRACT The teeth become very close to each other when they are crowded, but their structures remain individualized and, in this situation, the role of the epithelial rests of Malassez is fundamental to release the EGF. The concept of tensegrity is fundamental to understand the responses of tissues submitted to forces in body movements, including teeth and their stability in this process. The factors of tooth position stability in the arch - or dental tensegrity - should be considered when one plans and perform an orthodontic treatment. The direct causes of the mandibular anterior crowding are decisive to decide about the...
