Publication date: April 2018Source: Bioactive Carbohydrates and Dietary Fibre, Volume 14Author(s): Qingbin Guo, H. Douglas Goff, Steve W. CuiAbstractA galacto-oligosaccharide product (VITAGOS™) was prepared by glycoside hydrolases (β-galactosidase from Aspergillus oryzae and Kluyveromyces lactis) using lactose as substrate. Monosaccharide composition analysis indicated that VITAGOS™ contained 40.3% (w/w, dry basis) glucose and 51.1% (w/w, dry basis) galactose. According to high performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) analysis, VITAGOS™ was a sugar mixture with degree of polymerisation (DP) ranging from 1 t...

Cordyceps sinensis: Anti-fibrotic and inflammatory effects of a cultured polysaccharide extract
Publication date: April 2018Source: Bioactive Carbohydrates and Dietary Fibre, Volume 14Author(s): Danfei Huang, Soma Meran, Shao-Ping Nie, Adam Midgley, Junqiao Wang, Steve W. Cui, Mingyong Xie, Glyn O. Phillips, Aled O. PhillipsAbstractIt has been suggested that the traditional Chinese herbal preparation Cordyceps Sinensis (CS) may have a beneficial effect in renal disease. To satisfy increasing demand, CS derivatives have been produced by aseptic mycelia cultivation. We have demonstrated antifibrotic activity of cultured CS previously. The aim of this study was to examine bioactivity of a polysaccharide isolated from cu...

The impact of supplementation with dietary fibers on weight loss: A systematic review of randomised controlled trials
Publication date: April 2018Source: Bioactive Carbohydrates and Dietary Fibre, Volume 14Author(s): Kia Yong Chew, Iain A. BrownleeAbstractThe prevalence of excess body weight has significantly increased, with recent estimates suggesting 1.9 billion people are overweight or obese worldwide. While intake of dietary fiber (mainly from plant-based foods) is associated with improved weight management over time, it is uncertain whether dietary fiber isolates will benefit weight loss. The present study aimed to systematically assess the current evidence that dietary fiber supplementation can impact on weight loss in overweight ad...

In vitro fermentation of beta-glucans and other selected carbohydrates by infant fecal inoculum: An evaluation of their potential as prebiotics in infant formula
Publication date: April 2018Source: Bioactive Carbohydrates and Dietary Fibre, Volume 14Author(s): Ka-Lung Lam, Hoi-Yee Keung, Kin-Chun Ko, Hoi-Shan Kwan, Peter Chi-Keung CheungAbstractPrebiotics are being added to infant formula in order to mimic the effects of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) for the growth of probiotic bacteria especially bifidobacteria and lactobacilli in the infant gut. This preliminary study compares the in vitro fermentation of 13 different carbohydrates including monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides by infant fecal samples collected from 3-month old breast-milk fed...

Dietary fibre for glycaemia control: Towards a mechanistic understanding
Publication date: April 2018Source: Bioactive Carbohydrates and Dietary Fibre, Volume 14Author(s): H. Douglas Goff, Nikolay Repin, Hrvoje Fabek, Dalia El Khoury, Michael J. GidleyAbstractOne of the many functional benefits of dietary fibre when present in the human diet is its ability to reduce the rate of absorption of glucose after consumption of high glycaemic carbohydrate-containing foods, leading to a blunted blood glucose response curve and less demand for insulin. Glycaemia control through dietary intervention is of significant importance to those at high risk for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2D), or those with Impair...

Effect of ultra high temperature processing and storage conditions on phenolic acid, avenanthramide, free fatty acid and volatile profiles from Australian oat grains
Publication date: Available online 22 September 2016Source: Bioactive Carbohydrates and Dietary FibreAuthor(s): Jasmeet Kaur, Andrew Whitson, John Ashton, Lita Katopo, Stefan KasapisAbstractThe present study examines the influence of ultra high temperature (UHT) treatment and storage conditions (22 and 40 °C) on the phenolic acid and avenanthramide composition of oat samples during 12-week shelf life. The evolution of free fatty acid and volatile compounds is also investigated due to their impact on storage quality. Ferulic acid is found as the most abundant phenolic acid in oat samples followed by p-coumaric acid. C...

Impact of dietary fibre on in vitro digestibility of modified tapioca starch: viscosity effect
Publication date: Available online 10 November 2016Source: Bioactive Carbohydrates and Dietary FibreAuthor(s): Nikolay Repin, Steve W. Cui, H. Douglas GoffAbstractIn the current work, amylolysis of modified tapioca starch in simulated small intestinal conditions was studied in the presence of each of four dietary fibre types including yellow mustard mucilage, soluble flaxseed gum, fenugreek gum or oat gum. Each fibre was used at concentrations that were matched across the four fibre types for post-digestion viscosity. Due to molecular heterogeneity these concentrations were different for each fibre. The progress of amyloly...

Enhanced production and antioxidant activity of endo-polysaccharides from Phellinus igniarius mutants screened by low power He-Ne laser and ultraviolet induction
In this study, a Phellinus igniarius mutant was screened through low power He-Ne laser and ultraviolet (UV) induction. The mutant was then used to improve the production of endo-polysaccharides. In the shake flasks, the dry weight of the mycelial biomass and the production of endo-polysaccharides derived from the screened mutant (JZx) fermentation were 20.715 g/L and 1.428 g/L, respectively, which were 40.31% and 56.58% higher than those of the control strain (CK). In addition, isozyme electropheresis spectrogram analysis results indicated that the genetic materials of the screened mutants were altered. The endo-...
