Nursing Care of Women Who Have Undergone Genital Cutting
Abstract
Female genital cutting (FGC), commonly called female genital mutilation, affects millions of women but is poorly understood by many health care providers. FGC procedures intentionally alter the female genital organs for nonmedical reasons and include partial or total removal of female genital organs. These procedures, which have no medical value, are usually done between birth and puberty. Health consequences vary in severity but can be devastating. Women who have experienced FGC may be reluctant to seek health care or to disclose their condition to providers. Suggestions for culturally competent care of women who...

Marijuana Use in Pregnancy
Abstract
With the legalization of both medical and recreational use of marijuana in some U.S. states, nurses and other clinicians should be prepared to care for pregnant women who have used marijuana during pregnancy. Relationship‐Based Care for Newborns With Down Syndrome and Endocardial Cushion Defect
Abstract
Down syndrome with endocardial cushion defect is a challenging diagnosis for parents as well as members of the health care team. Utilizing a framework of relationship‐based care, nurses are in a position to positively affect parents’ experience by providing education, advocacy, and support from initial diagnosis through discharge. The plan of care is multidisciplinary and focuses on critical developmental needs, such as bonding and feeding. Because Down syndrome is associated with multiple anomalies, anticipatory guidance is needed to assist parents with establishing a health maintenance plan for their child a...

Strategies to Decrease Maternal Request for Early Elective Induction
Abstract
Severe maternal discomfort in the third trimester is not a diagnostic risk justification for elective induction before 39 weeks gestation. Alternative methods of intervention and supportive resources to help sustain a woman at the end of pregnancy have been largely absent in discussions pertaining to best practices. Nurses and midwives are in an ideal position to play a leadership role in working with physician colleagues as well as other members of the health care team to broaden the conversation to include alternative and complementary interventions, and to provide guidance and assistance to help women cope with...
