Postpartum and Neonatal Nursing Care During the 2009 H1N1 Influenza Pandemic
We describe select influenza infection control policies and practices related to postpartum and newborn care during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. In an online survey of obstetric and neonatal nurses, significantly more nurses indicated a written hospital policy supporting each of the practices during versus before the pandemic. The two practices least often implemented were temporary separation of healthy newborns from ill mothers (37.7 percent) and testing newborns for influenza virus infection if signs of influenza were observed (31.4 percent). Presence of written hospital policies increased implementation of practices. Findin...

Osteoporosis Risk Reduction and Bone Health
Abstract The Office of the U.S. Surgeon General has described osteoporosis as a major public health concern that is both underdiagnosed and undertreated. Educating women about modifiable risk factors and encouraging them to alter and maintain lifestyle choices that improve bone density is essential for their bone health. Evaluating those at risk using laboratory measures and dual X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA), and appropriate therapeutic intervention followed by monitoring for compliance and treatment effectiveness should result in risk reduction and improved bone health. Updated Treatment Guidelines for Gonorrhea Infections
Abstract Gonorrhea is the second most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the United States. It continues to be a major cause of morbidity for women and has been linked to infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease. In 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revised the current treatment guidelines for gonorrhea in response to the rising rates of antibiotic resistance. This column will discuss the new guidelines, including the rationale for the change as well as nursing implications to support timely and effective treatment of gonorrhea. (Source: AWHONN Lifelines)

Incarceration During Pregnancy
Abstract Women are now the fastest growing group among incarcerated persons in the United States. With approximately 6 percent to 10 percent of incarcerated women pregnant, the intersection of pregnancy and incarceration is an important issue. Incarcerated women are more likely to experience illness and serious diseases, and pregnant incarcerated women are particularly vulnerable, reporting late or less than optimal prenatal care. Nurses working in labor and delivery, postpartum units and correctional facilities are at the forefront of assessment, education and advocacy for pregnant women who are incarcerated. This column ...

Tracking ‘Near Misses’ to Keep Newborns Safe From Falls
This article describes an innovative project to prevent newborn falls using information gathered about near misses. Most near misses occurred on the night shift, had the mother holding the baby and occurred an average of 52.6 hours after delivery. Collaboration among staff and patients is crucial to address risk factors present during near misses and to ultimately prevent newborn falls both in the hospital and at home. The art of supporting families faced with neonatal transport
Abstract When newborns and their families are separated due to neonatal transport, it's critical to support families to ensure emotional and physical well‐being of both babies and parents. Care providers at both sending and receiving facilities play an equally important role in providing education, information and support to families separated from newborns. A family‐centered care approach in neonatal transport is truly a multidisciplinary, multiunit and multisystem approach. (Source: AWHONN Lifelines)

Developing a Policy to Support Breastfeeding in Women Who Are Hospitalized and Acutely Ill
This article describes the development and implementation of a policy to identify, educate and support acutely ill women and their families in reaching their breastfeeding goals. A case study highlights how we supported the initiation of breastfeeding in an adult intensive care unit. Considerations for obstetric nurses when postpartum women are hospitalized on nonobstetric units are shared. (Source: AWHONN Lifelines)
