Ankyloglossia Its Impact Breastfeeding
This article contrasts two very different experiences of one mother breastfeeding her two sons to demonstrate the potential impact of ankyloglossia on breastfeeding. When too restrictive, ankyloglossia, also known as tongue‐tie, can cause the newborn to ineffectively suckle at the breast. Breastfeeding difficulties can occur, such as long feedings or damaged nipples. When nurses, lactation consultants and other providers recognize this situation, they can refer women for further care and treatment, which can ultimately lead to breastfeeding success. Donor Motivations, Associated Risks and Ethical Considerations of Oocyte Donation
Abstract Three decades after the first reported successful cases, oocyte donation continues to grow in popularity and regard as an established method to aid women in achieving their reproductive goals. As a result of the increased demand for donated oocytes, many young women in the U.S. volunteer to undergo complex medical procedures to donate their oocytes in return for financial compensation. To best care for these women before, during and after donation, it is important to explore donor characteristics and motivations, discuss the safety of the donation procedure and examine the ethical issues related to this process. Sexually Transmitted Infections in Pregnancy
Abstract Sexually transmitted infections (STI) occur during pregnancy and can have serious consequences for women and infants. National guidelines include recommendations for STI screening in all pregnant women; however women continue to be underscreened, and risks related to infection during pregnancy persist. Nurses caring for women of childbearing age should be aware of screening guidelines and approaches for testing. This column reviews two recent studies: The first examines compliance with recommended prenatal STI testing and the second highlights a novel concept to reduce the female‐gender‐specific approach to ST...

Hypnotherapy for Labor and Birth
Abstract Hypnotherapy is an integrative mind‐body technique with therapeutic potential in various health care applications, including labor and birth. Evaluating the efficacy of this modality in controlled studies can be difficult, because of methodologic challenges, such as obtaining adequate sample sizes and standardizing experimental conditions. Women using hypnosis techniques for childbirth in hospital settings may face barriers related to caregiver resistance or institutional policies. The potential anxiolytic and analgesic effects of clinical hypnosis for childbirth merit further study. Nurses caring for women duri...
