Clinical characteristics of children with congenital Zika syndrome: a case series
This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics of children with congenital Zika syndrome; to compare the outcomes of infants infected in the first (1T, n=20) and second trimesters of pregnancy (2T, n=11); to investigate correlations between birth weight, birth and follow-up head circumference, birth gestational age, and gross motor scores. Methods: Participants were evaluated with Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) and part A of the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM-A). ANOVA compared head circumference, birth gestational age, birth weight, and gross motor performance of 1T and 2T. Results: The correlations ...

A new biofeedback approach for the control of awake bruxism and chronic migraine headache: utilization of an awake posterior interocclusal device
Conclusion: The utilization of a posterior interocclusal device designed for the management and control of awake bruxism through biofeedback seems to contribute to the reduction of pain (including migraine headache) in the majority of patients, and, even with the device withdrawal (at t90), the improvement remained at the same level, suggesting the patients succeeded in controlling their awake bruxism and consequently the pains.RESUMO Introdu ção: A relação de comorbidade bidirecional entre enxaqueca crônica e dor no segmento cefálico nos levou a avaliar a melhora na redução da dor em pacientes diagnosticados co...

Predictors of hemorrhagic transformation after acute ischemic stroke based on the experts’ opinion
Conclusion: Although many studies have evaluated HT in patients with acute ischemic stroke, the published risk factors were neither uniform nor in agreement with those cited by the stroke specialists. These findings may be helpful to build a score that can be tested with the goal of improving the prediction of HT.RESUMO Introdu ção: A transformação hemorrágica (TH) é uma complicação comum após a isquemia cerebral e pode estar associada a desfechos desfavoráveis. Alguns fatores de risco para TH têm sido identificados, mas ainda há controvérsias. Objetivo: Descrever os fatores de risco para TH mais frequent...

Clinically significant differences: what to choose?
Abstract A unique association joins Guillaume Apollinaire, Blaise Cendrars and Louis Ferdinand C éline. Besides being great exponents of French literature, they were all neurologically wounded during the First World War. Apollinaire had a traumatic brain injury, Cendrars developed phantom limb neuropathic pain and Céline presented radial nerve paralysis. There is quite an evidence that suppor ts that their artistic output was also influenced by acquired neurological conditions during the war. The examples of these three French authors reveal the surprising intimacy Neurology can share with art and history.Resumo Uma asso...

Neuroimaging investigation of memory changes in migraine: a systematic review
Conclusions: Migraine is associated to global dysfunction of multisensory integration and memory processing. This condition changes the activity of structures in various regions related to memory of pain, prospective memory, as well as in short- and long-term verbal and visuospatial memories. However, it is necessary to perform studies with larger samples in association with cognitive tests, and without the interference of medications to verify possible alterations and to draw more concrete conclusions.RESUMO Introdu ção: Indivíduos com enxaqueca geralmente se queixam de menor desempenho de memória. Métodos de diag...

The Xbox/Kinect use in poststroke rehabilitation settings: a systematic review
Conclusion: The greater use of Xbox/Kinect in treating patients after stroke is in recovery of balance and motor function, and the evidence support its application. These findings enable the use of virtual reality technology through Xbox/Kinect in rehabilitation programs, focusing on postural balance and motor skills. However, conclusive results are still not possible. Therefore, caution in the use of this technology is required.RESUMO Introdu ção: Jogos ativos baseados em realidade virtual têm sido amplamente utilizados na reabilitação de muitas condições clínicas. No entanto, estudos sobre a utilização do Xb...

Presence of generalized periodic discharges and hospital mortality
Conclusions: The presence of post-CA GPDs was associated with worse prognosis, but it was not clear whether these patterns are independent factors of an unfavorable evolution.RESUMO Introdu ção: As descargas periódicas generalizadas (DPG) são padrões raros que podem ser encontrados durante monitorização eletroencefalográfica prolongada (MEP) em pacientes críticos. Esses padrões têm sido correlacionados com crises não convulsivas e estado de mal epiléptico não convulsivo, associados a um pior prognóstico. Objetivo: Comparar o desfecho entre pacientes que desenvolveram DPG e pacientes com anormalidades i...
