Oral mucosal epithelial cells express the membrane anchored mucin MUC1
“Oral mucosal epithelial cells express the membrane anchored mucin MUC1” by Ukkonen et al.The oral mucosal pellicle is the protective mucus layer on the oral mucosa. It is known to have an essential role of oral health. The transmembrane mucin MUC1 is prominent on the buccal and labial surfaces binding salivary proteins in pellicle formation. Mucin MUC1 can exist both in the membrane-associated and secreted forms. There are conflicting results on the presence of MUC1 in the oral epithelium. Main objective of the current study was to demonstrate the presence and localization of the membrane -anchored mucin MUC1 in oral ...

Urine metabolic profiling for the pathogenesis research of erosive oral lichen planus
Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a relatively common chronic immune-pathological and inflammatory disease and potentially oral precancerous lesion (Silverman, 2000). Its prevalence is between 0.5% and 3% (Herman& Sargi, 2013) and 0.5 –12.5% of OLP cases could encounter malignant transformation (Safadi, Al Jaber, Hammad,& Hamasha, 2010). OLP may affect any location in the oral cavity, whereas the oral mucosa, tongue and gingiva are the most common locations (Perdigao et al., 2007). OLP has three variants: the reticular, the plaque-like, and the erosive lesions. (Source: Archives of Oral Biology)
