I think this scene from Aquaman #23 is the first underwater psychic nosebleed –and earbleed — we’ve seen (or at least that I’ve documented). All previous Psychic Nosebleed Zen posts. Tags: comics medicine nosebleed aquaman topo (Source: Polite Dissent)

Lois Lane: Surgical Pioneer
You want to see some of the most imaginative surgery in comic book history? Then have I got a comic for you. Not only does Superman’s Girl Friend Lois Lane #12 feature not one, but two incredible operations, but it manages to do it all in just a mere eight pages. Plus Aquaman. While on vacation in Hawaii with some unknown guy1, Lois Lane decides to go scuba diving and explore the wreck of a Spanish frigate2. Unfortunately, the ship shifts while she is exploring it and she is trapped, her legs crushed. Of course, Aquaman just happens to be swimming by, and he and his octopus pal, Topo, rescue her. Aquaman recogniz...

Daredevil #26: A Medical Review
Daredevil #26 Mark Waid, writer Chris Samness, artist Another heart-related concept found in comic books is that just like fingerprints, everyone has a unique heartbeat. Therefore, if your senses are sharp enough, you’ll be able to find someone wherever they are just by listening for their particular heartbeat. Sounds good, but this idea has never been tested in the real world, and personally, I doubt it would actually hold true unless you had some weird murmur or a mechanical heart valve. Unlike fingerprints, heartbeats vary greatly from minute to minute. Regardless, I’ll accept that the “unique heartbeat” id...

Tuesday PSA: Schools Need You!
Schools Need You! was found in Web of Mystery #21 (Charlton Comics, 1951) As far as I’ve been able to discover, the “National Citizens Committee for the Public Schools” was a group active in the late 1940s to mid-1950s that included a number of highly placed businessmen whose goal was to achieve increased school funding at the state and local level. As for the PSA itself, I don’t think the second panel could ever happen today — and it was probably wishful thinking in 1951, too. (People studying the facts before making suggestions? School administrators happy to hear recommendations from the ...

Daredevil #25: A Medical Review
Daredevil #25 Mark Waid, writer Chris Samness, artist Larry, an informant, tells Matt Murdock/Daredevil that a not-yet-revealed adversary has been experimenting on the homeless by exposing them to toxic chemicals, hoping to duplicate Daredevil’s origin and powers. Larry explains that he managed to escape and offers to lead Daredevil back to the lab. Because the informant’s heart rate remains completely steady, Daredevil decides he must be telling the truth1. Once they arrive at the purported location of the lab, Daredevil reveals that he knows it’s a setup because he’s detected that something is not quite kosher ...
