Monday PSA: High Ratings
This PSA was well-made — even if it didn’t scan well (sorry) — full of good information, and starred a well recognized, popular celebrity. Undiagnosed high blood pressure is common, particularly in the African-American community, and can cause significant damage before the onset of any obvious symptoms — this is why it is called “the silent killer.” Click on the image for the full ad This is one of the problems with celebrity-driven PSAs: history is not always kind. Bill Cosby is, to say the least, no longer held in the same high regard as he once was — reminding us that well-mea...

Mockingbird #2 and #3: Medical Annotations
Continuing my medical annotations of the first story arc of Mockingbird. Part one can be found here. Mockingbird #2 Chelsea Cain, writer Kate Niemczyk, artist Number of times we’re reminded Bobbi is a scientist: 0 Not much medicine in the second issue, so I’m just going to look at what SHIELD Medical considers “high risk” exposures: The Super Soldier Serum is the drug that gave Captain America his powers1. In her earliest appearances — before she became Mockingbird — Bobbi Morse was part of a team attempting to recreate the Super Soldier Serum for SHIELD. Gamma Rays are a form of ionizi...

Mockingbird #1: Medical Annotations
I hope everyone has been reading Mockingbird, which recently finished its first storyline. It’s a fun comic featuring an enjoyable character, good writing, and great art. Since much of the first story takes place in a SHIELD medical clinic — and since Bobbi keeps reminding us she has a doctorate in biology — I thought the series was ripe for some elucidating medical annotations. Since I don’t want this post to drag on forever, I’m going to break the storyline down into three separate posts. This first one will just deal with the first issue. Mockingbird #1 Chelsea Cain, writer Kate Niemczyk, a...

Monday PSA: The Words We Live By!
Click on the image for the full ad It’s an election year here in the United States, so I’ve scrounged up a nicely topical public service ad today. Enjoy! Dr. Gym’ll Does Not Like House Calls
And I can’t imagine what he’d think of patients who look their symptoms up on the internet… I have several patients a day who admit they look their symptoms online, and they always preface it with an apology. Go ahead — look things up, you won’t hurt my feelings. But don’t be surprised when I don’t quite agree with your diagnosis of bubonic plague — there’s only been a single case in Illinois in the past 45 years, and that was at the other end of the state. The Suicide Squad Movie, Medically
I finally went to see Suicide Squad this weekend, and I enjoyed it much more than I expected. It’s certainly my favorite of the recent DC super-hero movies, which is admittedly a low-bar. Still, I look forward to seeing it again. Without further ado or explanation, let’s jump straight to looking at the medical aspects of the movie. We’ll call them the good, the bad, and the ugly. The Good: The doctor running to help the seizure patient on the subway platform. He detects no pulse, so he starts chest compressions. Simple, and correct. (Now, one could argue that he should have assessed the airway and breathi...
