Supporting Survivors through a Tough Mudder
I love the LIVESTRONG mission because it supports ANY Cancer at ANY stage of the process.  Three years ago, my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 small intestine cancer. He had a year-long fight which included multiple rounds of chemo, multiple surgeries and rehab.  As of this month, my dad is two years cancer free! My family and I were so blessed by the love and support of friends, family, co-workers all throughout my dad’s battle. While my dad was going through treatment, I started looking into charities that support small intestine cancer, but being so rare there weren’t any big events, or fundraisers specifically for...

The Financial Impact of Cancer on Survivors: A LIVESTRONG Survey Update
Earlier this year, a study using LIVESTRONG data from 2012 was published in the health policy journal, Health Affairs. Authors spoke to the heavy financial burden of cancer care among survivors, including reported medical debt and bankruptcy. Now, we have analyzed similar LIVESTRONG data from 2015, which has revealed similar findings. Over half of 1,067 survivors surveyed in 2015 reported having faced financial problems as a result of their cancer diagnosis and treatment. These problems included borrowing money and going into debt or otherwise not being able to cover the costs of their care. As in 2012, a majority of 2015 ...

I’m Going Over the Edge for Cancer Survivors
We all have fears in life. Some people are scared of spiders, I have a crippling fear of heights. In spite of my fear, I am making it known publicly today, that I’m facing my fear of heights in honor of those fighting cancer. On September 10th Team LIVESTRONG and I are rappelling down a 20 story building to raise money for LIVESTRONG’s free programs and services. We are literally going “over the edge” for cancer survivors. My fear of heights has nothing on the fear people face when they find out they have cancer. At LIVESTRONG we work every day to help these individuals deal with all sorts of issues they are facing...

Why I Became a Cancer Advocate: Aimee
“It’s cancerous.” Those were my mother’s words on November 17, 2008. She had been hospitalized earlier that fall for unexplained internal bleeding and had just received the results of the follow-up tests. The doctors found a tumor in her stomach, and it was cancerous. I was devastated. Only days earlier, my best friend had laid her mother to rest; the breast cancer was too aggressive. We were still reeling from her death when we got my mother’s diagnosis. The next few weeks were a blur of doctors’ visits, tests, and conversations with my extended family while we worked with doctors to figure...

Tweet Your Support for Cancer Survivors to Members of Congress
LIVESTRONG supporters are in Washington, D.C., for the One Voice Against Cancer (OVAC) annual lobby day urging Congress to make cancer a top national priority, and you can help advance their message. The LIVESTRONG Foundation is a member of OVAC, a coalition of 49 nonprofit organizations that believe robust federal funding is crucial to making advances in cancer prevention, treatment and research. While on Capitol Hill, advocates will ask that federal agencies working to fight cancer receive increased funding. WE NEED YOU to help amplify our message by sending one of the suggested messages below to YOUR members of Congress...

Why I Became a Cancer Advocate: Amy
by Amy Mattes, LIVESTRONG Leader Walking out of a friend’s funeral that had lost her battle with leukemia, and watching her three young daughters, husband, family and community grieving, felt very unnecessary. In addition, her twin sister had stage IV lymphoma.  I was forever changed that day. I vowed to use my experience and knowledge and advocate in the fight against cancer.   As a cancer registrar, I have witnessed almost every aspect of cancer. A very insightful aspect of my job has been participating on a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers, and pastoral care staff. We discuss our patient...

Five Boros with Team LIVESTRONG
This past Sunday, over 32,000 riders from all over the world descended upon New York City to take part in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour. Team LIVESTRONG was represented by 30 riders who collectively fundraised over $30,000 for the foundation’s cancer support services. The team kicked off the weekend by meeting up for a happy hour on Friday evening. It was a great opportunity for the team to get to know each other and share their connection to the foundation’s mission. One of our teammates spoke about his participation in the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program after he was declared cancer free. He was proud to share that he wa...

A Powerful LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Experience
Earlier this week I visited the Floyd County YMCA with my LIVESTRONG teammate Polly Jenkins and our partners at Eli Lily to see a YMCA program in action and to discuss our partnership. I have always heard great things about the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program, but I left this site visit with a whole new and fresh perspective.  In short, I was blown away. I wish I could have videoed this whole experience, or even better, brought you all with me. One thing is for sure – LIVESTRONG at the YMCA isn’t just an exercise program – it is helping people return to LIFE after cancer.  It’s just as much about the rebuildin...

The LIVESTRONG Brave Box
LIVESTRONG is excited to announce a new product to help you shower some extra love on people affected by cancer! We have partnered with Treatmint Box to launch the Brave Box, a package filled with fun and thoughtful gifts for the cancer survivors in your life. Gifts include tea, honey, a journal, and art prints. Order one for someone you lov...

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Text to Connect Pilot Kicks Off
There are more than 14.5 million cancer survivors in the United States today, and the LIVESTRONG Foundation is always looking for new ways to improve access to our navigation services. Last month we launched a “text to connect” pilot project at select YMCA locations that offer the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program. A little background on LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: The physical, emotional, and financial side effects of a diagnosis are significant and often long-lasting, which is why LIVESTRONG partnered with YMCA of the USA in 2007 to create a unique program to address the needs of cancer survivors. “LIVESTRONG at the YMCA...

A New Way to Support Cancer Education in Schools
At Hotels for Hope, we are honored to not only call LIVESTRONG a nonprofit partner…but also our friends. LIVESTRONG provides crucial support and services for those affected by cancer. This year, Hotels for Hope is excited to team up in an effort to fundraise for the LIVESTRONG at School program. Research has shown that 25 percent of cancer survivors in the United States have school-aged children. Cancer is difficult enough to understand as an adult. But imagine being a child and learning that your parent, family member, friend or teacher was diagnosed with cancer. It’s crucial that teachers are able to offer cancer...
