Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is a neoplatic disease
Pathophysiology
1) chronic lymphocytic leukemia is a neoplastic disorder with clonal proliferation of lymphocytes
2) 95% of cases are B cell in origin
3) primary site of involvement is the bone marrow (eventually bone marrow becomes completely replaced) with release into bloodstream of neoplastic lymphocytes
4) spleen, liver, and lymph nodes may become enlarged
5) 10 % of patients convert to prolymphocytic leukemia (most with more aggressive course)
6) 5% of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia convert to Richter’s syndrome

Seeing her for the first time again Youtube guy Jason Mortensen was filmed by his wife Candace in a video that was posted showing him groggily hitting on his wife, whom he did not recognize as he was emerging from general anesthesia.

Cryptococcus gattii Causing New Deadly Fungal Infection
Cryptococcus gattii is a deadly fungal infection that has now been found in several states outside of the Pacific Northwest in a development that is perplexing to infectious disease physicians and public health officials.
Unlike the more common Cryptococcus neoformans which infects mostly immunocompromised patients, C. gattii, while still very rare, can infect and kill the young and healthy, including a recent case of a healthy 18 year old woman in Georgia. The fungus causes severe brain and lung infections.

Zebrafish Research May Hold Cure for Seizure Disorder
Zebra fish may hold cure for seizure disorder according to a research study published by scientists at University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Scott Baraban lead a team that tested 320 already approved drugs in zebrafish embryos that have the same genetic defect that causes Dravet syndrome, an condition of intractable seizures in infants. The researchers found that the antihistamine clemizole stopped the seizures within 10 minutes after the zebrafish were exposed to it.

Rectus sheath hematoma is a not uncommon condition caused by iatrogenic injury during laparoscopic injury or seen in the setting of anticoagulation, especially in an older patient. The bleeding has been described as both venous and arterial in origin.

Buffett Fortune Drained by Hospital
Buffett fortune amassed over the years by investors Donald and Mildred Othmer has been drained by the hospital that received it as a bequest.
The couple, who purchased shares of the legendary Berkshire Hathaway, donated $135 million to Long Island College Hospital upon their death. The hospital was to spend only the income from the endowment but over the years raided the fund to use for general operating expenses.
Now, the owners of the hospital are trying to close the hospital and nearly all of the money is gone. Warren Buffett is said to be outraged.

Trachea Transplant Patient Dies
Trachea transplant patient Hannah Warren has died. The two year old was a patient at and Illinois children’s hospital and received the implant after she was born without a trachea.
A trachea fashioned in part from stem cells was implanted by regenerative medicine specialist Dr. Paolo Macchiarini of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.

Randy Travis Viral Cardiomyopathy
Randy Travis has been admitted into the hospital with viral cardiomyopathy and is listed in critical condition.
Viral cardiomyopathy is a condition caused by a virus infecting the heart muscle, causing dysfunction in the pumping mechanism of the heart chambers. It can cause fluid buildup in the lungs, brain, and peripheral tissues that manifests as shortness of breath, difficulty oxygenating, confusion, and edema of the skin and extremities.
The condition can be caused by at least 20 different viruses and does not always spontaneously reverse with treatment.

Teresa Heinz Kerry has been transferred from the small hospital on Nantucket to Massachusetts General Hospital in the Beacon Hill Section of Boston according to news reports.

Teresa Heinz Kerry hospitalized in stable but critical condition according to news reports. While we are not participating in her care, this report is worrisome as Ms. Kerry has not been reported to be in ill health.
Kerry, who is married to Secretary of State John Kerry, could be suffering from one of a number of conditions common to women of her age (74), including myocardial infarction (MI or heart attack) and stroke. This editor recently met and spoke with Mr. Norris during part of the filming of the documentary at 100,000 Angels gathering of his medical flight team Mercy Medical Airlift. His outcome and progress after his surgery was truly astonishing to this former transplant surgeon.
